Section Modulus calculation and optimization

  • SECTION MODULUS

Section modulus is defined as the resistance toward the bending of a component, means it opposes the parts to make it bend.

Section Modulus is a geometric property used to calculate the bending stresses in a structural member.

types of section modulus:

  1. Elastic section modulus:Elastic section modulus is calculated when we are to use the material behavior till the yield point
  2. Plastic sectioned modulus: The plastic section modulus is used for materials where the elastic yield is acceptable and the plastic behavior is considered to be an acceptable range.
  • HERE WE WILL CALCULATE THE SECTION MODULUS FOR THE GOOD DESIGN SECTION:

Here we will take a section of the hood and going to command section inertia analysis and analys the moment of ineria (M)

here we get a value of M=2.96e+05 mm4

and calculated its outer most edge length from the neutral axis which is indicated by Y= 888.972mm

NOW we know the formula for calculating section modulus which is,

S=I/Y,

=2.96e+05/888.972

= 332.67 mm3

  • IMPROVED SECTION MODULUS:

here we increase the area of the section of the hood just by offsetting the inner panel to a length of 2mm and then done the SECTION INERTIA ANALYSIS to calculate the Moment of inertia which results in incresed moment of inertia of the hood results in increse the strength of the hood as shown in below figure:

Here the value of incresed moment of inertia is 3.1539e+05 mm4

and the length remains the same, now increased SECTION MODULUS is calculated below:

S= 3.1539e+05/888.972=354 MM3

NOW After optimising we get the 354-332=22mm3 more sectin modulus strength
