Section Modulus calculation and optimization

                                                                                         Section Modulus

Aim:

To optimize the strength of the car hood panel by calculating the section modulus in three different cases.

Section Modulus:

Section modulus is the ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fibre. It gives an idea about how much load the given structure can take. If the section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases and hence its load-bearing capacity.

Section modulus is calculated using the formula

   S = I/y

where,

 S = section modulus

 I = moment of inertia

 Y = distance between the neutral axis and extreme end of the object.

Distance from the neutral axis to the most extreme end of the object:

Y = 483.653/2

    = 241.87265

Case 1:

Moment of inertia

 I = 3.375 x`10^5``mm^4`

 y = 241.8726mm

 S = 3.375 x`10^5`/241.8726mm

    = 0.0139 x `10^5``mm^3`

Case 2:

Moment of inertia

I = 3.616 x `10^5``mm^4`

y = 241.8726mm

S = 3.616 x `10^5`/ 241.8726mm

   = 0.0149 x `10^5``mm^3`

Case 3:

Moment of inertia

I = 3.0145 x `10^5``mm^4`

y = 241.8726mm

S = 3.0145 x `10^5`/ 241.8726mm

   = 0.013 x `10^5``mm^3`

Result:

Therefore case 2 may be considered for strengthening the hood panel when compared to cases 1 and 3.

The difference between each case are 0.5mm
