Soild Meshing for Intake main fold

Aim:

To check the quality of the given solid Geometry i.e., Intake main fold by creating an ortho tria mesh on the surface and to the volume of the geometry.

Abstract:

The given geometry is a solid component which has no inner thickness when isolated in a particular region. The Geometry should be given an ortho tria mesh at the outer surface and the inner volume using volumetric mesh without off elements and maintaining a good mesh flow as per the mentioned quality criteria.

Methodology:

  • The given geometry should not have any geometrical errors. The adjustments of cons and hot points must be done so that there may be no off elements created while meshing if needed.
  • Mention the quality criteria and start ortho tria meshing on the surface of geometry. After meshing the surface, volume meshing should be done for the geometry. Each component should be meshed at a time by isolating the remaining components.
  • Check for off elements which are to be removed by using the mesh tools in both surface and volumetric mesh. Overall there must be kicks and raised edges on the geometry after meshing.

Introduction:

An inlet manifold is the part of an engine that supplies the fuel/air mixture to the cylinders. The primary function of the intake manifold is to evenly distribute the combustion mixture (or just air in a direct injection engine) to each intake port in the cylinder head(s). Even distribution is important to optimize the efficiency and performance of the engine. It may also serve as a mount for the carburetor, throttle body, fuel injectors and other components of the engine.

Procedure:

  • First after importing the geometry, it must be checked for any kind of errors and are to be fixed. If there are no errors, set the quality criteria and target length as required and start creating a mesh on the surface.

  • Off elements will be created after meshing the surface of the component. The hot points and cons of the geometry should be adjusted according to the minimum and maximum lengths limits. The off elements are to be removed using different tools such as split, swap, join, paste, reconstruct, smooth etc. overall the mesh must be done without any off elements and the raised edges and knees are to be smoothened.
  • A volume mesh is to be created to the component after meshing the surface. To create a volume mesh the component must be defined as a PSOLID card. The PSLOID card must be created and defined in the volumetric mode.

  • A new solid quality criteria known as collapse is to be created so that the collapsed mesh elements are detected in the volume mesh.

  • Select the define option in the tool box and select the manual option. Set to auto in manual mode and select the total geometry.

  • After selecting the component a new window is shown by the software in which a new PSOLID card is to be created.

The created PSOLID card will appear in the property manager.

  • Next, select the list option in which the undefined component is listed. Right clicking on it shows few options in which an option known as remesh is to be selected .
  • There will be five kinds of remesh options, in which the required mesh option is to be selected and to be remeshed.
  • After re meshing the component and isolating any random area will give a irregular non uniform mesh as shown in figure.
  • The collapsed errors will be highlighted in purple colour. If there are any kind of collapsed errors, it can be solved using the tools in the volume mesh mode.
  • Remove the total off elements and maintain a good mesh follow. Thus the volume meshing of the given solid component is completed.

Off elements:

  • The off elements created in the geometry are due to the maximum length errors which cannot be adjusted as required shape of the component will be deformed.
  • The collapsed errors in the geometry are created near the intake and exit pipes where the geometry will be having raised edges if removed.

Result:

Thus the volumetric ortha tria meshing of the given solid component is completed.

Before meshing

After meshing

Volumetric mesh

Learning outcomes:

  • Learned to give tria and ortha tria meshing.
  • Learned to give a volumetric mesh to a solid component.
  • Learned how to maintain a smooth mesh flow for a tria and ortha tria mesh.
  • Learned new tools in the volumetric mesh.
