Week 5
Solid Meshing for a rear-view Mirror
Aim:
To check the quality for the given Rear – view mirror by creating a Ortho tria mesh, considering the volume of the geometry.
Abstract:
The given geometry has four PIDs i.e., 4 solid objects which have no inner thickness when isolated in a particular region. Each Geometry should be given an ortho tria mesh at the outer surface and the inner volume using volumetric mesh without off elements and maintaining a good mesh flow as per the mentioned quality criteria.
Methodology:
- The given geometry should not have any geometrical errors. The adjustments of cons and hot points must be done so that there may be no off elements created while meshing if needed.
- Mention the quality criteria and start ortho tria meshing on the surface of geometry. After meshing the surface, volume meshing should be done for the geometry. Each component should be meshed at a time by isolating the remaining components.
- Check for off elements which are to be removed by using the mesh tools in both surface and volumetric mesh. Overall there must be kicks and raised edges on the geometry after meshing.
Introduction:
A rear-view mirror is a flat mirror in automobiles and other vehicles, designed to allow the driver to see rearward through the vehicle's rear window.
In cars, the rear-view mirror is usually affixed to the top of the windshield on a double-swivel mount allowing it to be adjusted to suit the height and viewing angle of any driver and to swing harmlessly out of the way if impacted by a vehicle occupant in a collision.

Procedure:
- The given geometry has four components. Each component have their respective PIDs. Therefore each component must be given tria and ortho tria mesh on the surfaces and volumes. These are the following geometries.

- Considering the first geometry (according to the PID list) i.e., the rotating ball, check the geometry before meshing and fix them if needed. If not , set the quality criteria as needed.
The minimum and maximum lengths are the sufficient shell quality criteria to give a tria or an ortho tria mesh.
- Start meshing the first component. Meshing must be done by selecting each correctional area of the component so that there may be no off elements created. If created then can be removed easily without disturbing the remaining mesh flow. The mesh for the first component will look as shown below. Few adjustments are to be done in this component on the cons and the hot points so that for removing off elements and a smooth mesh flow.
- Complete the mesh for remaining components one by one and area by area. Use the tools to recurrent the off elements and uniform meshing by using the tools such as split , swap, move paste, join, reconstruct, smooth etc. the meshed tria and ortho tria components are shown bellow.

- After giving a good quality tria mesh the solid component must be given a volumetric mesh ie., meshing the inner volume with ortho tria meshing. To give the volumetric mesh, a solid quality criteria known as collapse is to be set.
- select the volumetric mesh option.
- The component must be defined for proceeding for the volumetric mesh. So, select the define auto option and select the component which is to be defined.
After selecting the component a new window is shown by the software in which a new PSOLID card is to be created.
The created PSOLID card will appear in the property manager.
- Next, select the list option in which the undefined component is listed. Right clicking on it shows few options in which an option known as remesh is to be selected .
- There will be five kinds of remesh options, in which the required mesh option is to be selected and to be remeshed.
- After re meshing the component and isolating any random area will give a irregular non uniform mesh as shown in figure.
- Repeat the same process of volumetric mesh for the remaining three components. The mesh formed will be as shown in figure.
- The collapsed errors will be highlighted in purple colour. If there are any kind of collapsed errors, it can be solved using the tools in the volume mesh mode.
- Remove the total off elements and maintain a good mesh follow. Thus the volume meshing of the given solid component is completed.
Result:
Thus the volumetric ortha tria meshing of the given solid component is completed, satisfying the quality criteria.
Learning outcome:
- Learned to give tria and ortha tria meshing.
- Learned to give a volumetric mesh to a solid component.
- Learned how to maintain a smooth mesh flow for a tria and ortha tria mesh.
- Learned new tools in the volumetric mesh.
Conclusion:
- The total elements in the surface mesh are 106808
- The total elements in the volumetric mesh are 455571
