Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS
Introduction
section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beam and flexural members. by finding the section modulus we can find the resistance to remain unchanged when the force is applying to the object or substances.
S= I / Y
S - section modulus
I - the moment of inertia
y - the distance between the neutral axis and the end of the object.
Case 1 :
For my hood design the moment of inertia values are,

Maximum moment of inertia = 4.812875561e+06[mm^4]
Minimum moment of inertia = 1.456975431e+04[mm^4] = 4.3604[mm^4]
The total distance of the hood Y = 944.23 mm
Distance between the neutral axis to the extreme end = (944.23/2) = 472.115 mm
To find section modulus of HOOD section, we have to calculate
S= 4.3604/472.115
= 0.0092 mm^3
Case 2:
In order to increase the resistance to bending of HOOD, I have made some changes in my HOOD design

Maximum moment of inertia = 4.813874623e+06[mm^4]
Minimum moment of inertia = 1.492639116e+04[mm^4] = 4.4574[mm^4]
To find section modulus of new HOOD section, we have to calculate
S = 4.4574/472.115
= 0.0094 mm^3
CONCLUSION
The section modulus of my Hood is 0.0094 mm^3
Therefore Strength of material is directly proportional to the moment of interia, thus increasing the sectional area increases strength of component.
