Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Aim:
- To calculate the section modulus of the car Hood by taking its crosssection and analyzing the result.
- And to improve the section modulus of the car Hood by altering the Design .
Section Modulus:
- It is the ratio of Moment of Inertia (I) of the beam cross-section about the neutral axis to the distance (y) of extreme fiber from the neutral axis.
- The section modulus of the cross-sectional shape is of significant importance in designing beams. It is a direct measure of the strength of the beam. A beam that has a larger section modulus than another will be stronger and capable of supporting greater loads.
Section Modulus of various crosssection:

Formula for calculating Section Modulus:
S or Z = I/y
S or Z - Section modulus of material
I- Moment of inertia
y- Length of extreme fiber from the neutral axis
Case1: Section Modulus of the Hood Design which was already created:

- MO1 (Max): 4.778970343e+06[mm^4]
- MO1 (Min): 1.532669316e+04[mm^4]
-
As per the section modulus equation,
S = I/Y
I = MOI (min) value is considered
Y = Total distance /2
Y=872.4/2 = 436.2mm
S= 1.532669316e+04[mm^4]/436.2 mm
S=35.1 mm^3
Case 2:
- By increasing the distance between the inner panel and outer of the hood by 0.5 mm

- MO1 (Max): 4.918918963e+06[mm^4]
- MO1 (Min): 1.597406542e+04[mm^4]
-
As per the section modulus equation,
S = I/Y
I = MOI (min) value is considered
Y = Total distance /2
Y=872.4/2 = 436.2mm
S= 1.597406542e+04[mm^4]/436.2
S= 36.6 mm^3
Conclusion:
- As we Increase the cross section area of the hood ,the section modulus and the moment of interia increases.
- In case 1 S=35.1 mm^3 (Before changing the distance)
- In case 2 S= 36.6 mm^3 (After changing the distance
