Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS AND OPTIMIZATION

The objective of this report is to understand section modulus of the model and analyze its effect on BIW structures by optimizing it under different conditions.

Section properties are vital in structural analysis and design which is efficient to increase the load bearing capacity by optimzing the shape of the section. One such property is Section Modulus and is explained below

  • Types of section modulus
  • elastic section modulus
  • plastic section modulus

SECTION MODULUS

Section Modulus is the ratio of the moment of inertia about neutral axis upon the extreme point of the section from the neutral axis.

S= I/y __________ (1)

S= Section Modulus

I = Moment of Interia

y= extreme point from neutral axis

The bending stress equation is defined as

σ = M y/I

where M is the Bending Moment

y is the distance between extreme point and neutral fiber

I is the Moment of Inertia

Thus the equation is simpilfied as

σ = M/S

It is the direct measure of strength in the beam, larger the section modulus greater the load bearing capacity and higher the resistance to bending.

Taking sketch from the hood

2d Section of the Hood

Calculating Section Modulus of the sketch by using ' Section Inertia Modulus' command.

Here I got a Maximum and Minimum area moment of inertia which are,

I max = 6.976x 10^4 mm4

I min = 2.047x 10^6 mm4

Y = 755.548/2

= 377.774 mm

By obtaining all the values, now we can calculate Section modulus of the hood.

S (max) = 6.976x 10^4 mm4 / 377.774 mm

= 0.18466067 x 103 mm3

S (min) = 2.047x 10^6 mm4/ 377.774 mm

= 5.4185836x10^3 mm3

  • Optimization of the 2D sketch for better results

by removing one embosses from the model to obtain more inertia resistance

Now performing the 'section inertia modulus' command

Here I got a Maximum and Minimum area moment of inertia which are,

Here I got a Maximum and Minimum area moment of inertia which are,

I max =7.766x10^4 mm^4

I min = 2.439x10^6 mm^4

Y = 754.126/2

= 377.063 mm

By obtaining all the values, now we can calculate Section modulus of the hood.

S (max) = 7.766x10^4 mm^4/ 377.063 mm

=0.205960277 x 103 mm3

S (min) = 2.439x10^6 mm^4 / 377.063 mm

=7.23603599x10^3 mm3

  • Conclusion

From the above study we can find that for obtain more inertia resistance remove unwanted embosses from the model
