Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM

To Use the Section from Hood design and calculate the Section Modulus using the formula

S = I/y

 Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

PROCEDURE:

The data are collected from taking the master section using the mid plane

SAMPLE CALCULATION

CASE1)FRONT CRASH ORIGINAL

Imin (in Meters)=1.829*10^6 m

Imax(in Meters)=7.611*10^8 m

Imin (in mm)=1829000mm

Imax (in mm)=761100000 mm

Total Dist=877.872mm

Y=Total Dist./2  = 438.936 mm

S=I/Y

Smin=Imin/Y  ;  Smax=Imax/Y

Smin=1829000/ 438.936 => 4166.894mm

Smax=761100000/ 438.936 => 1733965.771mm

Savg=(4166.894+1733965.771)/2 => 869066.3325mm

 CASE2)FRONT CRASH 1.5MM

Imin (in Meters)=2.141*10^6

Imax(in Meters)=8.519*10^8

Imin (in mm)=2141000

Imax (in mm)=851900000

Total Dist=877.872mm

Y=Total Dist./2  = 438.936

S=I/Y

Smin=Imin/Y  ;  Smax=Imax/Y

Smin= 2141000/438.936 => 4877.704

Smax=851900000/438.936 =>1940829.642

Savg=(4877.704+1940829.642)/2 =>972853.673mm

By Comparing both the cases

869066.3325mm< 972853.673mm

CASE1)SIDE CRASH ORIGINAL

Imin (in Meters)=1.224*10^6 m

Imax(in Meters)=1.294*10^8 m

Imin (in mm)=1224000mm

Imax (in mm)=129400000mm

Total Dist=485.041mm

Y=Total Dist./2  =242.5205 mm

S=I/Y

Smin=Imin/Y  ;  Smax=Imax/Y

Smin=1224000/ 242.5205 =>5046.996mm

Smax=129400000/ 242.5205 => 533563.142mm

Savg=(5046.996+533563.142)/2 => 269305.069mm

 CASE2)SIDE CRASH 1.5MM

Imin (in Meters)=1.39*10^6

Imax(in Meters)=1.469*10^8

Imin (in mm)=1390000

Imax (in mm)=146900000

Total Dist=485.041

Y=Total Dist./2  = 242.5205

S=I/Y

Smin=Imin/Y  ;  Smax=Imax/Y

Smin= 1390000/242.5205 => 5731.474

Smax=146900000/242.5205 =>605721.990

Savg=(5731.474+605721.990)/2 =>305726.732

By Comparing both the cases

5731.474mm < 605721.9905mm

CONCLUSION

So, here the difference can be seen in the moment of inertia and the change in the section modulus can be seen by the change in the design(depth).
