Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM

To Use the Section from Hood design and calculate the Section Modulus using the formula

S = I/y

Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

PROCEDURE:

The data are collected from taking the master section using the mid plane

SAMPLE CALCULATION

CASE1)FRONT CRASH ORIGINAL

Imin (in Meters)=2.032*10^6 m

Imax(in Meters)=7.357*10^8 m

Imin (in mm)=2032000 mm

Imax (in mm)=735700000 mm

Total Dist=877.395 mm

Y=Total Dist./2 = 438.6975 mm

S=I/Y

Smin=Imin/Y ; Smax=Imax/Y

Smin=2032000/ 438.6975 => 4631.893 mm

Smax=735700000/438.6975 => 1677009.784mm

Savg=(4631.893+1677009.784)/2 => 840820.838mm

CASE2)FRONT CRASH 1.5MM

Imin (in Meters)=2.353*10^6

Imax(in Meters)=8.291*10^8

Imin (in mm)=2353000

Imax (in mm)=829100000

Total Dist=877.395

Y=Total Dist./2 = 438.6975

S=I/Y

Smin=Imin/Y ; Smax=Imax/Y

Smin= 2353000/438.6975 => 5363.604

Smax=829100000/438.6975 =>1889912.753

Savg=(5363.604+1889912.753)/2 =>947638.178

By Comparing both the cases

840820.838mm <947638.178mm

CASE1)SIDE CRASH ORIGINAL

Imin (in Meters)=1.333*10^8 m

Imax(in Meters)=6.452*10^5 m

Imin (in mm)=645200 mm

Imax (in mm)=133300000 mm

Total Dist=485.429 mm

Y=Total Dist./2 = 242.7145 mm

S=I/Y

Smin=Imin/Y ; Smax=Imax/Y

Smin=645200/ 242.7145 => 2658.267 mm

Smax=133300000/242.7145 => 549204.930mm

Savg=(2658.267+549204.930)/2 => 275931.598mm

CASE2)SIDE CRASH ORIGINAL

Imin (in Meters)=1.4958*10^8 m

Imax(in Meters)=7.582*10^5 m

Imin (in mm)=758200 mm

Imax (in mm)=149580000 mm

Total Dist=485.429 mm

Y=Total Dist./2 = 242.7145 mm

S=I/Y

Smin=Imin/Y ; Smax=Imax/Y

Smin=758200/ 242.7145 => 3123.834 mm

Smax=149580000/242.7145 => 616279.620mm

Savg=(3123.834+616279.620)/2 => 309701.727mm

By Comparing both the cases

3123.834mm <616279.620mm

CONCLUSION

WE HAVE PERFORMED DIFFERENT SECTION MODULUS OUT OF WHICH THE OFFSETTED HAVE HIGHRER SECTION MODULUS SO THAT IT WILL RESIST IN HIGHER BENDING MOMENT.
