Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Sectoin moduluds of the hood

Section modulus:

It is a geometric property used for design of beams. The section modulus gives the strength of the part. The section modulus is the ratio of the Moment of inertia of the part to the distance of the neutral axis from the outer most fiber.

Section modulus=Moment on Inertia/Distance of the neutral axis from the outer most fiber
Section modulus=I/Y
I=Moment of inertia
Y=Distance of the neutral axis from the outermsot fiber.

Finding the section modulus of the hood:

Step 1:
Make a datum plane at the center of the hood--> arc length=50%

Step 2:
Use intersection curve command to make sketch on the above datum plane--> select the outer and the inner panel.

Step 4:
Hide all the parts and edit the sketch and make it a closed sketch

Step 5:
Use the command Section Inertia Analysis to analys the above curve

Section modulus of the hood:

The minimum Moment of Inertia (I): 1.359560575e+4 mm^4

The distance of the neutal axis from outermost point (Y): 440.05 mm

Therefore, the section modulus (S)
S=I/Y
S=1.359560575e+4 mm^4/440.05
S=30.89 mm^3

Changing the section for better section modulus:

Inorder to increase the section modulud I have offest the 2nd curve by 0.5 mm

The new valve of moment of inertia

I=1.33707885e^4
Section modulus (s):
S=I/Y
S=1.33707885e^4/439.2
S=30.38 mm

Conclusion:
The section modulus was calculated by the given formula. Changes were made to increase the section modulus.
