Challenge

REVIT_Revision w.r.t to code_Week 5

1)Why are building codes or standards essential for the modeling/ efficiency of drawings in Revit ?

As per definition, the building code is a set of local laws relating to how buildings should be designed or built, especially keeping in mind the safe and quality aspects of the final product.

The code contains guidelines for the overall structure of a building including wall assemblies, size of rooms, foundations, floor plans, roof structures, staircase design and mechanical and electrical assemblies such as plumbing, drainage system, lighting, and fixtures standards.

When we follow standard codes/standards of building in the software it gives us the drawing as per the specifications given by the government such that the building is ready for construction.

2)From the National Building Code list the groups that will be essential to you when you begin modeling in Autodesk Revit.

List of groups that will be essential to model a project in Autodesk Revit are,

1.Civil engineer

2.Structural engineer

3.Architect

4.Plumbing engineer

5.Electrical engineer

6.Project manager

7.Interior designer

8.Town planner

9.Urban engineer

10.HVAC engineer

11.Environmental specialist

12.Other specialists

3)List the five major steps that occur in project cycle . The steps should include from conceptualization of project to maintenance and final stage.

Project Management Institute(PMI) developed the five major steps that occur in project management. They are,

1.Project Initiation

2.Project Planning

3.Project Execution

4.Project Monitoring

5.Project Closure

1.Project Initiation:

Project initiation is the phase where the project starts. It provides an overview of the project, along with the strategies required to attain desired results. It is the phase where the feasibility and business value of the project are determined.

Time frames

Justification behind the project

Options that were considered

Budgets

Benefits

Potential risks

2.Project Planning:

Once the initiation stage is over, your project will enter the planning stage. As its name implies, this phase is everything to do with the planning and preparation of the project.

Project vision

Project schedule and deadlines

Team composition

Group and individual responsibilities

Recourses available, including budgets, how these will be utilized

Tools that we will use

Project workflows

3.Project Execution:

During the execution, you’ll implement your plan and begin to take all the steps necessary to carry out the project. This is the longest and most important phase of your project, in which all of the action happens. By the end of this stage, you will see the physical manifestation of the pre-execution brainstorming and planning.

Sets tasks for team members

Create and organise workflows

Motivate your team

Use resources that were allocated for the project in an effective way

Ensure that deadlines are being met and everything is progressing smoothly

Respond quickly to any stumbling blocks

Keep stakeholders updated on how the project is progressing

4.Project Monitoring:

In a monitoring face the project manager typically controls

Cost

Communications

Quality of outputs and quality of performance

Risks-new risks, as well as those that were determined in the phase 2

5.Project Closure:

The termination stage (also often referred to as the ‘closure’ stage) of the project is all about analysis and assessment.

A project manager’s checklist for the closure phase of the project would typically look something like this-

Released all deliverables

Tied up any loose ends and made sure that all aspects of the project have been completed.

Evaluated group and individual performance

Send reports to all key stake holders

Performed final analysis and evaluation of the project’s success

4)Give examples of different disciplines involved in construction of a project

The different disciplines involved in construction of a project are,

1.Civil engineer

2.Structural engineer

3.Architect

4.Plumbing engineer

5.Electrical engineer

6.Project manager

7.Interior designer

8.Town planner

9.Urban engineer

10.HVAC engineer

11.Environmental specialist

12.Other specialists

5)How are buildings classified ? Place the following buildings under each category
Four unit apartments
b. School with capacity of 1000 students
c. A single unit shop.
d. Multi story Shopping complex
e. Steel machine factory

Buildings are classified into different categories as,

1.Residential Buildings

2.Industrial Buildings

3.Educational Buildings

4.Institutional Buildings

5.Hazardous Buildings

6.Assembly Buildings

7.Business Buildings

8.Mercantile Buildings

9.Storage Buildings

  1. Four-unit apartments- Residential Building
  2. School with capacity of 1000 students- Educational Building
  3. A single unit shop- Mercantile Building
  4. Multi story shopping complex- Commercial/mercantile Building
  5. Steel machine factory- Industrial Building

6)Distinguish the roles of Design team and Management team

DESIGN TEAM:

The design team for construction projects consists of an architect and engineers. Often, the team itself may consist of an architectural firm and an engineering firm which themselves employ several architects or engineers.

ARCHITECTS:

The architect or architectural team is responsible for the design stage of the project. The architect will take an idea the owner has and if that idea is feasible, create a design around it. Different types of architects may specialize in different types of projects. Some architects specialize in specific types of buildings, while others specialize in a subset of the project itself.

ENGINEERS:

Engineers are responsible for ensuring that the finished product of the construction project is safely and appropriately constructed. But this is not all engineers do on construction projects. Engineers make sure that the project is as efficient as possible, reducing costs while maintaining necessary safety features. Engineers will also conduct an initial survey of the building site to assess feasibility for the project and get a sense of any special accommodations that may need to be made.

MANAGEMENT TEAM:

Project management is the process of leading the work of a team to achieve goals and meet success criteria at a specified time. The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all the project goals within the given constraints.

Project management team includes,

Project manager:

The project manager plays a primary role in the project and is responsible for its successful completion. The manager’s job is to ensure that the project proceeds within the specified time frame and under the established budget, while achieving its objectives. Project managers make sure that projects are given sufficient resources, while managing relationships with contributors and stakeholders.

Project manager duties:

Develop a project plan

Manage deliverables according to the plan

Recruit project staff

Lead and manage the project team

Determine the methodology used on the project

Establish a project schedule and determine each phase

Assign tasks to project team members

Provide regular updates to upper management

Project team members:

Project team members are the individuals who actively work on one or more phases of the project. They may be in-house staff or external consultants, working on the project on a full-time or part-time basis. Team member roles can vary according to each project.

Project team member duties may include:

Contributing to overall project objectives

Completing individual deliverables

Providing expertise

Working with users to establish and meet business needs

Documenting the process

Project sponsor:

The project sponsor is the driver and in-house champion of the project. They are typically members of senior management – those with a stake in the project’s outcome. Project sponsors work closely with the project manager. They legitimize the project’s objectives and participate in high-level project planning. In addition, they often help resolve conflicts and remove obstacles that occur throughout the project, and they sign off on approvals needed to advance each phase.

Project sponsor duties:

Make key business decisions for the project

Approve the project budget

Ensure availability of resources

Communicate the project’s goals throughout the organization

Executive sponsor:

The executive sponser is ideally a high-ranking member of management. He or she is the visible champion of the project with the management team and is the ultimate decision-maker, with final approval on all phases, deliverables and scope changes.

Executive sponsor duties typically include:

Carry ultimate responsibility for the project

Approve all changes to the project scope

Provide additional funds for scope changes

Approve project deliverables

Business analyst:

The business analyst defines needs and recommends solutions to make an organization better. When part of a project team, they ensure that the project’s objectives solve existing problems or enhance performance and add value to the organization. They can also help maximize the value of the project deliverables.

Business analyst duties:

Assist in defining the project

Gather requirements from business units or users

Document technical and business requirements

Verify that project deliverables meet the requirements

Test solutions to validate objectives

7)Refer to NBC, Identify the modeling requirements for the project ( from week 4).
Height Limitations
b. Area Limitations
c. Room sizing
d. Wall height
e. Thickness based on fire and life safety
