1) What are HVAC systems ? Why are they essential in modeling of buildings

Ans)HVAC stands for heating, cooling and conditioning.HVAC systems are milestones of building mechanical systems that provide thermal comfort for occupants accompanied with indoor air quality. HVAC systems can be classifIed into central and local systems according to multiple zones, location, and distribution.Primary HVAC equipment includes heating equipment, ventilation equipment, and cooling or air-conditioning equipment. Central HVAC systems locate away from building in a central equipment room and deliver the conditioned air by a delivery ductwork system. Central HVAC systems contain all-air, air-water, all-water systems. Two systems should be considered as central such as heating and cooling panels and water-source heat pumps. Local HVAC systems can be located inside a conditioned zone or adjacent to it and no requirement for ductwork. Local systems include local heating, local air-conditioning, local ventilation, and split systems.

System selection depends on three main factors including the building configuration, the climate conditions, and the owner desire. The design engineer is responsible for considering various systems and recommending more than one system to meet the goal and satisfy the owner of a building. Some criteria can be considered such as climate change (e.g., temperature, humidity, and space pressure), building capacity, spatial requirements, cost such as capital cost, operating cost, and maintenance cost, life cycle analysis, and reliability and flexibility. However, the selection of a system has some constraints that must be determined. These constraints include the available capacity according to standards, building configuration, available space, construction budget, the available utility source, heating and cooling building loads

The basic components or equipment of an HVAC system that delivers conditioned air to satisfy thermal comfort of space and occupants and the achieve the indoor air quality are listed

a. Typical HVAC unit includes Distribution center
b. Collector
c. Ducts
d. Blower

Ans)

Aim: Draw an HVAC system to week 7 assignment

Tools Used:

12. collaborate

13. manage links

14. systems

15. air terminal

16. layout connect

17. duct

Procedure:

1) create a new file with a mechanical template

2) collaborate it with the rest of the files

3)by using manage links as an arch file to the mech plan

4) select air terminal to place return and supply diffusers

5) select mechanical equipment and choose an air handling unit. Then place it

6) select the supply diffusers and handling unit to make duct do the same for return diffusers

Result: HVAC system was added to the plan

3) Use the add-ins tab to load plug-ins for robot structural analysis to your Revit software

Ans)Firstly open the shopping cart icon present on the top right corner of the revit page and click on the search tab and type structural analysis toolkit and select the appropriate version that is related to your revit version and install the file robot structural analysis will be added in revit.

4) Why do we need to assess buildings /analyze while modeling elements? Does design affect modeling in anyways?

ans)

Structural analysis is a detailed explanation of the effects of loads on physical structures and their components. The results of the analysis are used to verify a structure's fitness for use, often precluding physical tests. It is a method by which we find out how a structure or a member of a structure behaves when subjected to different loads. The results of the analysis are used to verify the structure's strength for its uses. Structural analysis is thus a key part of structural engineering. The process to determine the response or behavior of a structure under some specified loads or combination of loads is known as structural analysis. Response means to find out support reactions, bending moment, rotation, stresses, strains, shear force, and deflection that, the particular member would undergo due to the application of different types of load.

For a structural engineer to start a structural design, they must have the loads, or forces, and moments that a particular member and the structure as a whole have to resist. Unless there are determined the design cannot start. Design affects the modeling as it involves many important load factors which are important for a building to withstand and suppose we have done modeling of a building and there is some design change at any particular portion of the building we have to do the modeling as per the design.

5) From the structural model developed in weeks 6 and 7, export the complete analytical model to robot structural analysis.
a. List your assumptions on what boundary conditions will be realistic for the analysis approach
b. Use the design standards to decide what loads must be applied to floorings based on the type of structure decided
c. List the load combinations and include them in the analysis model
d. Analyze the building and report the following results
i. Maximum Moment in each floor for all Load Combinations
ii. Maximum Displacement in each floor for all Load combinations
iii. Lateral Displacement in building for all Lateral Load combinations
e. After analysis, do you think you have a better approach or idea in modeling structural members?

ans)

a)A boundary condition is a place on a structure where either the external force or the displacement are known at the start of the analysis. In this way, boundary conditions are where the structure interacts with the environment either through the application of an external force or through some restraint that is imposing a displacement. For a structural analysis problem to be solvable, every location on the boundary of our structure must have a known boundary condition, either a known force or a known displacement. The known force or displacement may have some magnitude or it may be zero. For example, we may know that there are locations on our structure that have no external force. This would be a zero force boundary condition. A displacement boundary condition that is zero is equivalent to the structure being held in place at that location.

b)

  • dead loadl
  • live load
  • environmental load

c)

Aim: List the load combinations and include them in the analysis model

Tools Used:

  • manage
  • structural settings

Procedure:

1)click on manage
2) select structural settings dialog box opens up

3) go to load combinations

d)

6) What is energy analysis and why do we need to consider it while modeling in Revit?

How does the factor of sustainability improve the quality of your design?

Ans)

Energy analysis is the traditional method of assessing the way energy is used in an operation involving the physical or chemical processing of materials and the transfer and/or conversion of energy.

Energy simulation can help you analyze the movement of energy in, out, and through the rooms and volumes in a building model. This information can help designers make better informed, cost-effective decisions that improve performance and reduce the environmental impact of buildings. Whole building energy simulation measures expected energy use (fuel and electricity) based on the building's geometry, climate, building type, envelope properties, and active systems (HVAC & Lighting). It takes into account the interdependencies of the building as a whole system. To perform whole building energy simulation for your Revit models, use Energy Analysis for Autodesk Revit. This add-in .connects the design power of Revit to the analysis power of Autodesk Green Building Studio. Sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, and the health and comfort of building occupants, thereby improving building performance. The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce the consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments.
