Reinforcement Detailing of Beams from ETABS output
Aim:
Run the analysis and design the RCC Moment Resisting Frame in two grids and we have to provide the reason for the failure of the given Project.
Objective:
- Analyse and design the given ETABS model
- Checking the Reinforcement detail.
- Identify the mid span Failure of beam and resolve the beam failure.
- Sway shear calculation as per IS-13920 code guidance.
Procedure:
1. Analyse and design the given ETABS model
Step 1: Open the given model.
- Open the ETABS software.
- Open the given challenge.

Step 2: Analyse the Model.
- Click on the Run analysis button
- You will see the analysis is proceeding.

Step 3: Designing the model.
- Now click on concrete frame design button which will design the longitudinal reinforcement and shear reinforcement for all the frames, including beam and column.

2. Checking the Reinforcement detail.
Starting with following steps.
- Drop down the concrete frame design icon
- Click on Display design info

- Then change to the shear reinforcement
- And click on apply.

3. Identify the mid span Failure of beam and resolve the beam failure.
Step 1: Identify the Mid span Failure of beam.
- You will notice that the mid span beam along grid A got failed due to over stressed.
- The stress is having to increase beyond the allowable value that’s why the reinforcement is impossible to calculate the value.
- For shear detail of mid span beam right click on it and check the report.

Click on Details.

Step 2: Resolving the beam failure.
- we have to increase the reinforcement or decrease the loading.
- We have to increase the shear capacity of the concrete by using the higher grade of concrete
4. Sway shear calculation.
Additional reinforcement guideline from IS 13920-2016 (clause 6)
- The given figure for the length 2d where ‘d’ is the effective depth of the beam, we should keep a certain reinforcement spacing.
- We Need minimum two bar for full length along top and bottom for the seismic design
- In the middle the shear reinforcement spacing should not be greater than d/2 where ‘d’ is the effective depth of the beam

Additional check to verify whether the provided reinforcement in the beam satisfies the sway shear requirement

Sway Shear force to the Right

Sway shear force to the Left.

Result:
Existing shear capacity in beam as per drawing (as per IS 456-2000 clause 40.4)
