Radar Mast & Final Assembly of Yacht

MODELLING AND ASSEMBLY OF AN AMERICAN PREDATOR YACHT USING SOLIDWORKS

OBJECTIVE

There are three main objectives of this project. They are as follows;

  • To model different parts of an American Predator Yacht using SOLIDWORKS.
  • To assemble the parts created in the assembly.
  • To render the assembly in SOLIDWORKS Visualize to create a photo realistic view

INTRODUCTION

This project explains the designing of American Predator Yacht using the CAD software SOLIDWORKS from sketching the parts and modelling them to final rendering of the assembly to give a photo realistic view.

From this project, we can learn curve generation, surface creation from curves and sketches, different types of surfaces, surface knit, etc.

METHODOLOGY

PART MODELLING > ASSEMBLY > RENDERING

The following are the key parts/models we will deal with in surface modelling using SOLIDWORKS.

  • Blueprint set-up
  • Modelling of propellers, radar
  • Modelling of the hull, garage door
  • Modelling of rear seats, middle seats, front seats
  • Creation of the superstructure
  • Final assembly model of the Predator Yacht.

The features used to create the parts are described below;

Boss Extrude - This feature is used to expand the object in 3D according to sketch plane.

Extrude Cut -  Extrude cut feature used to cut/remove the 3d object in linear path according to sketch.

Fillet - Fillet is a feature used for making round internal or external edges to avoid sharp edges and make it smooth.

Lofted Boss/Base - Lofted boss is a feature used to achieve Complex Shapes. It does this by interpolating surfaces between various cross-sections of a model. These cross-sections can be sketches, faces, or edges.

Split - Split tool is used to split single solid part into two solid parts. It is used to project an entity onto other surfaces or curved/planar faces.

Dome - Dome is a feature used to make dome shaped extrude including elliptical dome.

Shell - Shell feature is used to make to hollow space in solid part by selecting outer wall of the solid part and so removes the inner parts. It is also used to reduce the specific thickness.

Combine - Combine tool is used to make integration of two solid parts which intersect each other as same solid part.

Chamfer - Chamfer is used to make a sharp edge or corner slightly tapered rather than being a perfect square.

Linear Pattern - The linear parent is used to create a different number of instances required to create the pattern linearly.

Curve Driven Pattern - Curve driven pattern is used to make any pattern which followed by the curve is sketched before.

Circular Pattern - Circular pattern is a feature used to make 3d feature into circular pattern according to number of insistence.

Revolve Boss/base - Revolve feature is used to make cylindrical or circular 3D extrude along with a given reference axis as per drawn sketch.

Revolve cut  - Revolve cut is used to cut or reduce the extrude of cylindrical round surface.

Move/copy body - This feature is used to move/copy the 3D body to one place to another place.

Mirror - Mirror is used to mirror a feature or body by refernce of the selected plane.it reduces the working timing.

Sweep - This feature is used to sweep any kind of fully defined sketch along with the path.

Sweep Cut - Sweep cut is same as sweep feature but its directly proportional to sweep which makes a cut along with the sweep path.

Swept Surface - It is used to make a surface along with a path the curve is driven.

Boundary Surface - Boundary surface is used to make a surface in between two finished surface.

Loft Surface - Loft surface is used to make loft in between two profiles along with guide path.

Knit Surface - Knit surface is used to knit the two free edges or open edges of the surfaces together. Also it reduces the gap between the two edges of the surface.

Surface Trim -  It is primarily used to cut away material from a surface, and provides two modes: Standard and Mutual.

Extruded Surfaces - It is used to extrude a sketch or selected sketch contours in one or two directions two create a surface features.

Revolved Surfaces - It is used to revolve a sketch or selected sketch contours around and create a surface feature.

Filled Surfaces - It is used to patch a surface within a boundary defined by edges, sketches, or curves. We can use constraint curves to fill surfaces and adjust resolution control to improve surface finish.

Ruled Surfaces -  It inserts ruled surfaces in a specified direction from edges. Tangent to surface, Normal to surface, tapered to vector, perpendicular to vector or sweep can be selected. We can also trim and knit the surfaces and remove any connecting surfaces.

Move Copy surfaces - It moves or copy surfaces about a plane or a sketch.

Offset Surface - It is used to offset surfaces using one or more contiguous faces. This tool helps to create an offset surface with gaps.

Extend Surface - It extends one or more edges or faces on a surface, based on end conditions and extension type.

Offset Surface - It Offsets surfaces using one or more contiguous faces. This tool helps to create an offset surface With gaps.

Mirror Surfaces - A Mirror surface creates a copy of a selected feature, mirrored about a plane or planar face. A mirror sketch entity is a copy of a selected sketch entity that is mirrored about a center line. If the original feature or sketch is modified, the mirrored copy is updated to ,effect the change.

Reference Plane - To create planes in part or assembly documents. We can use planes to sketch, to create a section view of a model, for a neutral plane in a draft feature, and so on.

Projected Curve -  A projected curve is typically used either in sweeps and lofts as path or guide curve.

Split Line -The Split Line tool projects an entity (sketch, solid, surface, face, plane, or surface spline) .We can split curves on multiple bodies with one command.

Split Point -  Splits a sketch entity to create two sketch entities.

COMPONENTS DESCRIPTION

1.PROPELLERS

Propeller is a device which propels an object that transforms rotational power into linear thrust by acting upon a working fluid, such as water or air. The Sunseeker Predator Yacht will be assembled with three propellers. The main function of propeller is to propel the ship in the forward direction by producing thrust on water. Its working principles are Newton's third law of motion and Bernoulli's theorem.

2.RADAR

The term Radar is an acronym for ‘Radio Detection And Ranging’. Here it refers to Marine Radars which are used to detect what objects/obstacles are around, seeing through darkness, precipitation and poor visibility to safely navigate a ship by avoiding collisions. The radar scanner keeps rotating at 360 degrees about its vertical axis and is located at the top of the ship. They are electronic navigation instruments that use a rotating antenna to sweep a narrow beam of microwaves around the water surface surrounding the ship to the horizon, detecting targets by microwaves reflected from them, generating an image of the ship's surroundings on a display screen.

3.HULL

A hull is the watertight body of a ship or boat. The hull may open at the top, or it may be wholly or partially covered with a deck. The line where the hull meets the water surface is called the waterline. The hull of a ship is the most notable structural entity of the ship. To define the hull, it can be said that it is the watertight enclosure of the ship, which protects the cargo, machinery, and accommodation spaces of the ship from the weather, flooding, and structural damage. Hull has several watertight decks and bulkheads as the major transverse membrane. The intermediate member of the hull consists of girders, webs and stringers. Depending on the structural arrangements, there may be longitudinal members for strengthening purpose.

ASSEMBLY

All the designed components are taken into the assembly section in Solid Works and using different mating features such as concentric, coincident, parallel, etc., the entire assembly of the American Predator Yacht is created. Mates create geometric relationships between assembly components.

RENDERING

The assembled yacht is taken into Solid Works Visualize. Here various aspects such as appearance, camera, external lightnings, background scenes, etc. are taken into consideration before the creation of the final rendering. Then the final render is done to bring a photo realistic view of the yacht.

CONCLUSION

In this project, the basics of SOLIDWORKS, including surface modelling, assembly modellings, photo realistic renderings are learnt. The parts are modelled and assembled using mates. Then Photoview 360 was used to render a photo realistic image of the yacht.
