Radar Mast & Final Assembly of Yacht

Modelling and rendering of Predator Yacht

# In this project we will use Different features in SOLID WORKS and draw the Predator yacht and render it for realistic view.

Design approach:

Starting from propeller and ending till the rendering section has been described step by step by means of a flow chart.

First, we start with modelling of Yacht Propeller

Radar is the next modelled part

We then next created Blue prints of yacht for reference of further parts.

Garage door for the yacht

We now create the base of assembly HULL for yacht

Front seat, rear seat and middle seat are now drawn with reference to the HULL surface

Super structure of yacht is also done based on HULL reference

Radar mast is the next modelled part

We now add the camera, lighting and all other effects for final render.

Final assembly of all parts is done using mates and base reference as HULL part.

Now using photoshop 360 we render the modelled parts.

For the final section we render the images in SOLID WORKS VISUALIZE using different environments and back plates and environments.

COMMANDS:

Commands and Properties used for sketching is mentioned below

  • Insert command includes different
  • Boss/ Base command – This command has different set of sub commands which convert different types of 2D sketches into 3D models using reference line/axes and planes.
  • Cut- This command uses references and geometries to discard extra solid bodies from 3D models in different shapes and directions as required.
  • Feature- This is the most important command tab where different 3D operations are performed
  • Fillet/chamfer
  • Dome, shell
  • Combine
  • Split
  • Move/Copy
  • Draft
  • Mirror/pattern- This command is used for making cloned parts like that of reference part without redrawing it many times. We can make them linear, circular and sketch driven. This is mainly used in part CHAIN for sketching.
  • Surface- This command works like 1 & 2 but done for surfaces only.
  • Reference Geometry – With this command we can create plane, axis, coordinate system and point wherever we can inside the sketch using references.
  • Curves- This command is used for combining 2 different curves to get the desired projected curve out of it.
  • View orientation- This section provides us all the possible views for out sketch. For example-front, left, top and isometric views.
  • Tools Command includes

Sketch tools and sketch entities where all the commands required for 2D sketching like

  • Line
  • Spline
  • Circle
  • Arc
  • Offset
  • Fillet
  • Rectangle
  • When it comes to assembly section, we mainly use MATES command for different set of parts to assemble using planes.

#The main Features used in this modelling are mentioned below:

  • Projected curve: By this Feature we can project the required curve using two different sketches

2) Surface loft: In order to create a surface that goes exactly along with the preferred curves and edges as references. Below is an example for reference

Here we used surface loft with 2 curves as main profiles and used the other 2 edges closing the profiles as guide curves to complete the loft.

3) Surface Trim: This is a feature which remove/keep the excess or unnecessary profiles in both 2D and 3D. We can use the sketches as reference and trim those using the trim tool.

4) Surface extrude: This is features which makes the sketch expand in whatever direction you wish to a specified distance. It is both in 2D and 3D x Below is the example of extrude feature using sketch.

5) Surface Knit: It is one of the most important features in surface where this feature helps us join surfaces which have gap between them. Its range is minimum of .001 mm to maximum of 0.1mm.

6) Cut extrude: This is similar to extrude feature but this cuts/removes the desired surface that we choose and to what extent using the reference sketch.

7) Helix /Spiral:  this feature is used for helical sketches in order to make 2D sketches to 3D as shown in below. We can also control on pitch, angle and no of revolutions.

8) Linear pattern: This is used for drawing similar sketches repeatedly in a linear form with preferred distances and no of instances.

9) Mirror: The word itself tells us it uses a reference plane/face to create exact replica on the opposite side which skips redrawing of parts again.

10) Fillet/ Chamfer:  These features help sketches or solid bodies have smooth edges, faces and give desired shapes.

11) Surface sweep:   we can create the surface using a profile and a guide curve to form the same profile along it .

12) Dome:     We can create dome surface with direction and distance.

13) Boss extrudes1:

This is similar to extrude in surface where we use the profile/sketch and convert into solid bodies.

14) 3D sketches

We use this option to draw sketches in 3D in order to close the curves or profiles to perform sweep, loft and extrude.

15) Revolve.

We use this feature to create solid bodies using axis of revolution, direction and also to what angle to revolve.

16) Shell: SolidWorks shell tool is mainly used for shelling process, in which the material removed from the inner body of model by keeping small thickness and results a hollow model. Using this tool, you can make either completely closed hollowed model or one face opened type.

  • Sweep Boss / Sweep Cut: Sweep creates a base, boss, cut, or surface by moving a profile (section) along a path, according to these rules: The profile must be closed for a base or boss sweep feature; the profile may be open or closed for a surface sweep feature.
  • Loft Boss/ Loft Cut: The loft feature is an important tool for (surface) modelling in SolidWorks. The loft feature creates a shape by making transitions between multiple profiles and guide curves. This tool is very valuable for modelling complex surfaces. You can do some cool stuff when you use this feature properly.

19) Feature tree: This is basic section where we can edit hide and change any sorts of commands, we used at any point of time without disturbing the whole model. It is like set of commands used for modelling will be displayed step by step.

18) Mates: Similar to the feature tree for assembly purpose we use mates’ option to connect parts.

  • Reference Geometry: Reference geometry defines the shape or form of a surface or a solid. Reference geometry includes items such as planes, axes, coordinate systems, and points. You can use reference geometry in the creation of several kinds of features. For example:
  • Planes are used in lofts and sweeps.
  • An axis is used in a circular pattern.

# Parts we have drawn to complete the modelling of predator yacht are:

1) Modelling Sunseeker Predator Yacht – Propeller:

In this part drawing we have used revolve, cut extrude and loft options for exact curvature of wing. At the end we used circular pattern options for creating replicas around the shaft.

2) Modelling Sunseeker Predator Yacht – Radar

Here we used cut extrude option to engrave the name on the surface and also added appearances to the radar.

3) Modelling Sunseeker Predator Yacht – Hull

This is the main base of the predator yacht where we use projected curves, 3D sketches, extrudes in 2D and 3D, cut, Mirror, fillet/chamfer, sweep, loft options for part drawing. We also added decals to the hull.

4) Modelling Sunseeker Predator Yacht – Superstructure

This superstructure part drawing almost similar options to that of hull but more of projected curves, extrudes, trim and knit surfaces options. We also add appearances for the glasses dome and seats.

5) Modelling Sunseeker Predator Yacht – Radar Mast

6) Modelling Sunseeker Predator Yacht - Garage Door

7) Modelling Sunseeker Predator Yacht - Front Seat

8) Modelling Sunseeker Predator Yacht - Middle Seat

9) Modelling Sunseeker Predator Yacht - Rear Seat.

Below images are for the remaining parts:

# Final assembly of Sunseeker Predator yacht:

We use the mates feature to assemble all the parts at one place.

Hull is considered as the base structure where we use all the mates using Hull structure. We can also access the parts and make any changes in the design tree where all the sketches and features done are available.

#Using photo view 360 we render the image, change the quality of image.

# We also add cameras and lights for the assembled part in order to get the part more focussed and to view in a desirable way.

This below image is rendered in Photo view 360:

#Rendering using SOLID WORKS VISUALIZE:

Here we use the scene composition changes, backplate adjustments and create environment for the assembled part.

We can also adjust the lighting, brightness scenes and appearances in-order to look the render more realistic and natural.

The above is the example for the fully rendered Sunseeker Predator yacht.

Conclusion:

By this model we can get know the basics of solid works modelling and solid works visualize where we can model and render with clear cut informations.
