  9. Free surface moisture for Coarse aggregate= NIL
  10. Free surface moisture for Fine aggregate=NIL
  11. Sieve analysis- Coarse aggregate conforming to table 2 of IS 383 and Fine aggreagte conforming to grading zone 1 of table 4 of IS 383

STEP 1 Target Strength for the Mix

f'ck = fck + 1.65S = 35 + 1.65X5.0 = 43.25 N/mm2 (Table 1 and Table 2 of IS10262 : 2019 )

Where

f'ck = Average Target Strength at 28 days

fck = Average Characteristics Compressive Strength at 28 days

S = Standard deviation (Table 2, IS 10262 : 2019)

STEP 2 Approximate Air Content

As per IS10262 : 2019 Table 3,

Approximate amount of entrapped air to be expected in normal (non-air-entrained) concrete is 1% for 20mm Size of aggregate

STEP 3 Selection of Water-Cement Ratio

From Table 5, IS456 : 2000, Maximum w/c ratio is 0.45

Based on experience,adopted water-cement ratio is 0.40

0.40<0.45, hence O.K

Therefore consider w/c ratio of 0.40

STEP 4 Selection of water content

By referring Table 4, IS10262 : 2019

Clause 5.3

(For the desired workability (other than 50 mm slump),

the required water content may be increased or decreased by about 3 percent for each increase or decrease of 25 mm)

water content for slump value of 100mm = 186 + 14.95 = 197 Litres

Based on trial water content reduction of 23% consider while using super plasticisers.

Now water content 197.16 - 23% = 151.69 Litres

STEP 5 Calculation of cement Content

W/C ratio = 0.40

water content = 151.69 Litres

Hence Cement content = 151.69/0.40 = 379 kg/m3

As per IS456 : 2000 minimum cement Content not exceed by 320 kg/m3.

Hence ok

Superplasticizer = 1.5% of the weight of the cement = 379x0.015 = 5.68 Kg/m3

STEP 6 Proportioning of mix containing fly ash

  • The percentage of fly ash needs to be decided based on project requirement and quality of materials.
  • In some cases increase in cementitious material can be warranted. Increase in cementitious material content and its percentage may be based on experience and trial(this example is with increase of 10% cementitious material content).

Cementitious material content = 379*1.10 = 416.9 Kg/m3

Water content = 151.69 Kg/m3

Water-cement ratio= 151.69/416.9 = 0.36

Fly ash @30% total cementitious material content=416.9*30% = 125 Kg/m3

Cement(OPC)=416.9-125 = 291.9 Kg/m3

Fly ash being utilized = 125 Kg/m3

STEP 7 Proportioning of Volume of Coarse aggregate and fine aggregate

As per IS10262 : 2019, Table 5.

In zone II Volume of Coarse aggregate is 0.62

For w/c ratio 0.50 = 0.62

For w/c ratio 0.40 = ?

X = [(0.50-0.40)*0.01]/0.05

X = 0.02

Proportioning Volume of Coarse aggregate = 0.62 + 0.02 = 0.64

For pumpable concrete these values are reduced by 10%

Therefore,volume of Coarse aggregate = 0.64*0.90 = 0.58

Proportioning Volume of Fine aggregate = 1 - 0.58 = 0.42

STEP 8 Mix Calculation

Volume of concrete = 1m3

Volume of cement = weight of cement /(specific gravity X 1000)= 291.9/(3.17 X 1000) = 0.092 m3

Volume of water = 151.69/(1*1000) = 0.152m3

Volume of admixture = 5.62/(1.10 *1000)= 0.0025m3

Volume of Fly ash = 125/(2.2*1000) = 0.057 m3

Total volume of other material except aggregates= 0.092 + 0.152 + 0.0025 + 0.057 = 0.30 m3

Volume of coarse aggregate and fine aggregate = 1- 0.30 = 0.7 m3

Mass of coarse aggregate = 0.7 x 0.58 x 2.74 x 1000 = 1112 Kg/m3

Mass of Fine aggregate = 0.7 x 0.42 x 2.65 x 1000 = 779 kg/m3

Results

Cement = 291.9 Kg/m3

Water = 151.69 kg/m3

Fly Ash = 125 kg/m3

Admixture = 5.62 kg/m3

Fine aggregate = 779 kg/m3

Coarse aggregate = 1112 Kg/m3

W/C Ratio = 0.36

MIX Ratio 1 : 2.66 : 3.8
