Project - Analysis of a practical automotive wiring circuit

1. Identify the major elements in the above automotive wiring diagram.

Starter, Generator, Ignition Coil, Battery, Current and Voltage Regulator, Distributor, Junction block, Fuse, and Ammeter.

2. Explain the purpose and working of any three elements briefly.

Generator

Generators are useful appliances that supply electrical power during a power outage and prevent discontinuity of daily activities or disruption of business operations. Generators are available in different electrical and physical configurations for various applications. An Electric generator is a device which is used to produce electric energy, which can be stored in batteries or can be directly supplied to homes, shops, offices, etc. Electric generators work on the principle of the generator (also known as an alternator) is an electromechanical device that is responsible for generating electrical power while the engine is running. The main purpose of a generator in automobiles is to charge the battery and power the vehicle's electrical systems, such as the headlights, radio, and air conditioning.

The generator uses a belt-driven pulley system to convert mechanical energy from the engine into electrical energy. Inside the generator, a stationary magnetic field is created by a set of stator windings, while a rotating magnetic field is created by rotor windings. As the rotor rotates, it creates a changing magnetic field that induces an electrical current in the stator windings. This electrical current is then rectified and regulated by a voltage regulator, which ensures that the generator output remains within a certain range and is compatible with the vehicle's electrical system. The generator in automobiles works by converting mechanical energy from the engine into electrical energy, which is used to charge the battery and power the vehicle's electrical systems.

Battery

Batteries and similar devices accept, store, and release electricity on demand. Batteries use chemistry, in the form of chemical potential, to store energy, just like many other everyday energy sources. A chemical reaction between the metals and the electrolyte frees more electrons in one metal than it does in the other. The metal that frees more electrons develops a positive charge, and the other metal develops a negative charge. The battery is an electrochemical device that stores energy and releases it in the form of electrical power when needed. The main purpose of a battery is to provide a portable and reliable source of power for a wide range of applications, from small electronic devices like cell phones and laptops to larger systems like electric cars and solar panels.

The working of a battery involves a chemical reaction that takes place between two electrodes (an anode and a cathode) and an electrolyte solution. When the battery is discharged (i.e., providing power to an external device), electrons flow from the anode through the external circuit to the cathode, generating an electric current. Meanwhile, in the battery itself, chemical reactions occur at the electrodes that convert the chemical energy stored in the battery into electrical energy.

When the battery is recharged, the direction of the current flow is reversed, and the chemical reactions are also reversed, restoring the battery to its original state. This means that a battery can be used multiple times, as long as it is recharged before it is fully discharged.

There are many different types of batteries, each with its own unique chemistry and properties. Some common types of batteries include lead-acid batteries (used in cars), nickel-cadmium batteries (used in cordless tools), and lithium-ion batteries (used in cell phones and laptops). The purpose of a battery is to store and release electrical energy, and its working involves a chemical reaction that takes place between two electrodes and an electrolyte solution.

Fuse

Fuses are sacrificial devices used to protect much more expensive electrical components from the damaging effects of overcurrent. They consist of a low-resistance metal or wire that is used to close a circuit. A fuse consists of a piece of wire made of a metal or an alloy of an appropriate melting point, for example, aluminium, copper, iron, lead etc. If a current larger than the specified value flows through the circuit, the temperature of the fuse wire increases. This melts the fuse wire and breaks the circuit. Fuse is a safety device that is designed to protect electrical circuits and devices from damage caused by overcurrent or short circuits. The main purpose of a fuse is to prevent excessive current from flowing through a circuit, which can lead to overheating, fires, and other hazards.

The working of a fuse is relatively simple. A fuse consists of a thin wire or filament that is designed to melt and break the circuit when too much current flows through it. The fuse is connected in series with the circuit so that all of the current flowing through the circuit must pass through the fuse.

When the current in the circuit exceeds the rated value of the fuse, the wire or filament inside the fuse heats up and eventually melts, breaking the circuit and preventing any further current flow. This protects the circuit and any devices connected to it from damage caused by overcurrent.

Fuses come in many different shapes and sizes, depending on their intended use and the amount of current they are designed to handle. Some common types of fuses include cartridge fuses, blade fuses, and thermal fuses. The purpose of a fuse is to protect electrical circuits and devices from damage caused by overcurrent or short circuits, and its working involves a thin wire or filament that melts and breaks the circuit when too much current flows through it.

3. If the total load is 10A from a battery, what should be the fuse rating?

The fuse rating should be slightly higher than the expected maximum current drawn by the load. In this case, if the total load is 10A from a battery, a fuse rating of 12A or 15A would be appropriate.

It is important to note that the fuse rating should not be too high, as this could lead to a dangerous situation where the circuit is not protected from overcurrent. Additionally, the wire gauge and other components of the circuit should also be appropriately sized to handle the expected current flow.

4. If 500W is the load, what is the voltage and capacity of the battery you recommend?

battery voltage =12V

Power = 500W

Current (I) = Power (P) / Voltage (V)

I = 500W / 12V = 41.67A

we would need a battery with a capacity of at least 41.67 Ah (ampere-hours) to provide 1 hour of continuous operation at 500W.

The battery capacity needed is 41.6 Ah

60Ah battery is the standard battery available.

So, the recommended battery voltage and capacity is a 12V 60Ah battery.

5. Identify any two elements which are connected parallel to each other. Why they are connected in parallel?

  • Generator and Current & Voltage regulator

The voltage across these elements is not distributed from each other.

  • Tail stop Lamps

The individual currents add up to the total current.

6. Identify any two elements which are connected in series. Why they are connected in series?

  • Battery and Ammeter

An Ammeter is used to measure the current flowing through a component/circuit. Since the current remains the same in a series connection and also the resistance of an ammeter is very small it doesn't affect the current to be measured. So, an ammeter is connected in series to measure current.

  • Battery and starter

The same current flows throw these devices equally without disturbing each other.
