Project 2 Thermal modeling of battery pack

For a 10 cell series lithium-ion battery model, simulate the thermal effects and compare life cycle performance at various temperatures, charge & discharge rates using MATLAB.

Solution:

Component Requirement:

1. Battery (Table-Based)

to activate the SoC and Thermal Property Click on the battery block then this SIMSCAPE BLOCK will appear and do as ashown below.

Thermal Reference

Temperature Sensor

Convective Heat Transfer

Temperature Sensor

PS-Simulink Converter: to convert some physical quantity to Simulink data

Electrical Reference

Solver Configuration

Goto block

From Block

Scope for output waveform

Controlled Current Source for Discharge the battery with some constant discharge current

now the total simulink model is given below.

the thermal effects and compare life cycle performance at various temperatures:

the simulation is for 3600 seconds and temperature is 293.15K.

it is ambient temperature 293.15K or 20C.

here the state of charge of the the system is decreasing but the temperature is increased to more than 300K.

hence cooling system must be needed here to control the temperature.

at 3600 second, the SOC is at 40% and the Temperature is at 300K.

The Behaviour of the system at Tempearature 330K:

the above shown graph is for the temperature 330 K.

here I took it for 7200 sec to fully discharge the system .

we can see the system temperature is at 302.5K and fully discharge takes place at nearly 6000 sec.

The Behaviour of the system at Tempearature 360K:

the above shown graph is for the temperature 360 K.

here I took it for 7200 sec to fully discharge the system .

we can see the system temperature is at 303K and fully discharge takes place at nearly 6000 sec.

Conclusion:

from above observations we can see that the state of charge is zero at nearly 6000sec and the temperature is in between 300 to 303K.

so the 10 lithium ion cells in the battery model exhibit the same behaviour while discharging.
