Project 2 Fender

Introduction:

Fender is the metal structure that frames wheel of the car. Its part which comes in contact with the different parts of the vehicles such as A-pillar, sill, drip area, bumper and body of the vehicle. Wheel Arch component also fitted to the front fender portion.

Main function is to prevent the sand, mud, water or other liquids and other small road spray being thrown by air into the engine or pedestrian compartment.

Material Suggested :

Aluminium, plastics, magnesium, and fiber materials.

Types :

Full Bumper : Old model cars we can find this type. it covers the full area at fronter portion.

Half Bumper : Modied bumper with the reduction in the sheet metal materials and designed to produce with the blank.

Sample Fender Images:

Front fender is designed based on the design standards :

Front Fender consists of five attachments portions

  1. Drip Area Mounting region
  2. A-pillar Mounting region
  3. Body Mounting region
  4. Bumper Mounting region
  5. Sill Mounting region
  6. Baffle region

General Considerations for Design :

  • Drip area mounting should be less than 40mm.
  • Clearance of 10mm away from the engine compartment.
  • Ribs will be provided to increase the strength of mounting regions.

Drip Area Mounting region:

  • Main mounting area with the car body and its closer to the the engine compartment.
  • Need to consider the distance from the engine room, clearance from hood. Design considerations are followed as suggested.
  • Ribs should be provided for improving the strenth of the mount.
  • Flat surface should be maintaned at the contact patch of the mount.
  • Draft angle should be considered for designing and contact patch around the hole should be atleast 5 mm.
  • At the extreme edge of the mount blend is performed to avoid vibrations and spring back effect.

A-pillar Mounting region:

  • A-Pillar mounting is provided with 200mm clearance for fitting the wiper unit components.
  • At the mount flat surface should be maintained.

Bumper Mounting region:

  • This Region is for mounting the bumper and near by region will be for head lamps.
  • At the mount flat surface should be maintained.

Sill Mounting region:

  • This region will be mounted to the bottom sill portion of the car.
  • At the mount flat surface should be maintained.

Baffle region:

  • This region is used to attach the wheel Arch with the fender
  • At the mount flat surface should be maintained.

Isometric View of Front Fender:

Thus all five mounting regions are designed based on the inputs provided for fender region. Thus we considered the European standards for design considerations which will satisy all the conditions for Wheel Arch considerations also.

Thus front fender designed with Drip Area, A-pillar, Bumper, Sill, Body and Buffle as per the design standards.
