Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Introduction :
- Section Modulus is the measure of strength of any cross sectional area of the object about an neutral axis. Section modulus is also called as torsional section or polar modulus.
- Moment of inertia is the measure of resistance of the object against the bending, twisting or torsional moments , thus moment of interia increase with the strength of the material
Formula :
Section Modulus s = I/Y
- S = Section Modulus
- I = Moment of Inertia
- y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

Moment of Inertia :
Case 1 : Section Modulus for Hood Design
Moment of inertia for the section will be calculated using the software NX CAD.

I max = 4.8676*10^6 mm4
I min = 1.5389*10^4 mm4
so Section Modulus
Smax = I/Y = 21.133*10^3 mm3
Smin = I/Y = 0.068*10^3 mm3
From this study the strength of the hood varies from 0.06283*10^3 mm3 to 19.873*10^3 mm3
Case 2 : Section Modulus for Modified Hood Design
Thus the inner surface of the hood is offsetted by 1mm to calculate the change in Inertia.

I max = 4.8869*10^6 mm4
I min = 2.5615*10^4 mm4
so Section Modulus
Smax = I/Y =21.232*10^3 mm3
Smin = I/Y =0.104*10^3 mm3
Conclusion :
- Thus the strength of the section incease with increase in area in both the minimum and maximum values.
- Thus the strength of the material is increased by increase in cross sectional area and it also depends upon the composition of material, thickness of layers.
- Thus Momemt of Inertia has directly Proportinal relationship with the stregth of the material is evaluated through this study.
