Project 2

Design and Develop a Simulink model to understand the Energy analysis of EVs on different driving cycles

The project is used to analyze the energy consumption by the FTPT5 drive cycle pattern by the vehicle.

The Drive cycle source is used to input the velocity in m/s. The complete model has two subsystems ( EV and Energy analyses).

The input from the drive cycle is given to the longitudinal driver which is the PID controller. Depending on the speed vs time behavior the acceleration or deceleration command is given to the controlled PWM voltage controller by converting these commands into voltage signals vis the controlled voltage source. The PWM signals then control the switching action of the converter switches and the desired output power is delivered to the motor.

The output of the motor is then connected to the simple transmission gearbox which is then connected to the axle, and wheels. The wheels and axle is connected to the vehicle body through the hub. Rear-wheel drive is used in this application. The vehicle's speed is further again fed back to the Longitudinal driver for controlling the speed of the motor to reach desired performance.

The second subsystem consists of the blocks for energy analysis. The mass of the vehicle used for analysis is 750kg.

To calculate the energy the tractive force needs to be calculated.

Tractive force= Rolling resistance+ Aerodynamic resistance + Grade resistance + Acceleration resistance.

Tractive force = (rolling resistance coeff*mass of vehicle*gravitational force) + (0.5*density of air*velocicty square*drag coefficient*frontal area) + (mass of the vehicle*gravitational force*sine(road angle)) + ( mass * acceleration).

Blocks such as constant, gain, and derivative blocks to get acceleration upon deriving velocity, math squaring blocks, integrator blocks to derive energy from tractive power, and product blocks from Simulink are used.

The tractive force calculated is then multiplied by the velocity to obtain tractive power. The tractive power is then integrated to obtain energy and it is plotted.
