Challenge

Project 2

Aim – Foundation is the main support of any structure, which transmits loads to earth. In case of bridge the structure faces many challenges and finally it goes to earth through its foundation. So foundation is the important part of a bridge and it should be designed properly. Pile foundation is very common foundation as deep foundation.

Especially in this challenge it is to determine the loads to be applied on the abutment as per IRC 6 and forces acting on the abutment and Live load analysis and effective width calculation for 70 r and class A to be done to calculate the reactions on the abutment.

IRC: 6, IRC: 78, IRC 112 and IS 2911 has been followed.

Question 1) Calculate the loads to be applied on the abutment as per IRC 6
2) Live load analysis and effective width calculation for 70 r and class A to be done to calculate the reactions on the abutment.

  1. a) 1000 mm slab can be assumed for 15 m span (For self weight reactions)

3) Make Load combinations as per IRC 6 for ULS, SLS rare and quasi.
4) Do checks for ULS SLS rare and quasi and present a hand calculation.

Ans – As follows

Question 5) Also calculate the anchorage length of the bars and minimise the bars wherever you can.
6) Draw rebars to the scale and therefore calculate the kg/cumec of the pile and pile cap.

Ans -

Anchorage length of the bars is ( 8 x Diameter) for 90-degree bend while, (6 x Diameter ) for the bend of 135 degrees. Where sufficient development length is not able to provide in rebar for the development of stress, the anchorage length has been provided in BBS.
