Project 1 - Impact of Ball on Wall
Impact of rigid ball on plate:
Aim:Impact of rigid ball of diameter of 10mm made up of steel of different intial velocities on plate of 100x100x5 `mm^3` made up of Aluminium Alloy NL.
Steps to be followed:
- Explicit dynamic method is choosen for the study of impact on plate.
- Material selection:
Aluminium alloy NL is selected from the General Non-Linear Materials list for the plate with material parameters as shown in the image below:

Steel material is selected for the rigid ball from General material list with material parameters as shown in the image below:

- CAD Modelling for both the Spherical & Cuboid shape is done with respect to the given dimensions in Ansys Spaceclaim.
A square is drawn with dimensions of 100x100 `mm^2` and finally its extruded with Pull command under sketch tab of Spaceclaim:

A sphere is drawn with diameter of 10 mm is drawn by going to design tab Sphere option as shown in the image below:

Now the sphere is placed at the center of ball with distance of 50 mm with move command under sketch tab as per shown in the image:

- Material Assignment:
The plate is assigned with Aluminium Alloy NL while the ball is assigned to steel materials with stiffness behaviour as rigid as shown in the image below:

- Meshing:
Now the body sizing of 2mm for plates as shown in the image below:

- Boundary candititons:
- Case 1:
Intial velocity of 50 m/s is applied to the rigid ball by going to Intial canditions and right click & insert Intial velocity by selecting the body of rigid ball along negative Y axis by fixing the other two axis with respect to the given units as 50000mm/s.

Fixed support: Four faces of plate is fixed by using fixed support as shown in the image below:

- Analysis settings
The number of steps taken is 1 with End time being Distance between ball & plate x 2/Intial Velocity which comes out here as:50/50000x2=
2E-03s:

Case 2:
All canditions are same only Intial velocity is changed to 250 m/s while the analsysis end time is calculated as above:

End time as 4E-04s.

Case 3:
All canditions are same only Intial velocity is changed to 500 m/s while the analsysis end time is calculated as above:

End time as 2E-04s

Results:
Case1:
Equivalent stress on plate for ball velocity of 50 m/s:

Maximum Equivalent stress in plate:171.6MPa
Total deformation of plate:

Maximum Total deformation:0.4976mm
Equivalent Plastic strain:

Maximum equivalent plastic strain is 0.15214.
Case2:
Equivalent stress on plate for ball velocity of 250 m/s:

Maximum Equivalent stress in plate:402.13MPa
Total deformation of plate:

Maximum Total deformation:5.619mm
Equivalent Plastic strain:

Maximum equivalent plastic strain is 0.30514.
Case3:
Equivalent stress on plate for ball velocity of 500 m/s:

Maximum Equivalent stress in plate:627.78MPa
Total deformation of plate:

Maximum Total deformation:11.686mm
Equivalent Plastic strain:

Maximum equivalent plastic strain is 0.7029.
Comparision of Equivalent stress,Total deformation& Plastic strain for all the 3 cases:
| Case | Maximum Equivalent Stress(MPa) | Total Deformation(mm) | Maximum Equivalent Plastic strain(mm/mm) |
| 1 | 171.6 | 0.4976 | 0.15214 |
| 2 | 402.13 | 5.619 | 0.30514 |
| 3 | 627.78 | 11.686 | 0.7029 |
Conclusion:
From the comparision table above we can conclude that with respect to increase in impact velocity of rigid ball the maximum equivalent stress, maximum plastic strain & maximum total deformation increases as the distance between the ball & plate is fixed in all three cases which is 50mm but the time for the impact decreases from case 1>2>3.
