Project 1_Comparative study of different storey buildings for Seismic forces
Procedure:
- Open ETABS software.
- Click new model.
- Give model initialization setting as follow
- Click ok
- In the new model quick template dialog box , select custom grid spacing and click Edit grid data
- Give the following settings in grid system data dialog box.
- Click ok.
- Select custom story data under story dimension and click edit story data.
- Give the story data for first- three story as follow having story 1 as master story.
- Write click on the first column and select add story and click keep existing story heights.
- Give number of added story as 22.
- Click ok
- The following page opens
- Click Define--> Material properties
- Click Add new material for assigning concrete
- Click Add new material for assigning Rebars
- Click ok, Again add new and add Concrete of M30 Grade
- Click Define--> Section properties--> Frame sections.
- Select Add new property in the dialog box.
- Select the concrete shape as rectangular and give the following settings for the Beam
- Beam property is added.
- Again, click Add new property for creating property for column.
- Column property is added.
- Click--> Section properties--> Slab section
- Select Add new property and give the following settings.
- Clickà Define--> Load pattern
- Define load patterns by its name
- Click Define--> Mass source
- Check load cases by click Define-->Load cases.
- Create load combinations, Define--> Load combinations
- Create Columns by Quick draw column.
- Select quick draw beams.
- Select the first horizontal and vertical beams and go to edit and select replicate <!--[endif]-->Select first floor in plan view
- Draw slab using quick slab by having similar stories in the status
- Select all the beams from select tab
- Assign frame loads as distributed from assign tab.
- Select the slabs
- Assign shell loads as uniform
- Select the slabs from select tab and assign as diaphragm from assign tab.
- Click run analysis in the panel after saving the file.

Conclusion |
|
Effect of Stiffness on time period |
Building E ( 10 story with varying column size) |
1.73 Sec |
Here, if the stories are less then change in Column size does not effect on result. |
|
|
Building F (10 Story with Uniform column size ) |
1.73 Sec |
|
|
Effect of Stiffness on time period |
Building G ( 25 story with varying column size) |
4.17 Sec |
Here, we can conclude if the stories are high and change in Column size does effect on result. |
|
|
Building H (25 Story with Uniform column size ) |
4.41 Sec |
|
|
Effect of Mass on time period |
Building H (25 Story with 3 kN/SqM Imposed Load) |
4.41 Sec |
We provided uniform load but not so significant. Mass is directly proportional to the Displacement.
|
|
|
Building J (25 Story with 3.3 kN/SqM Imposed Load) |
4.42 Sec |
|
|
|
Building K (25 Story with 3.6 kN/SqM Imposed Load) |
4.43 Sec |
|
|
Effect of Building Height on time period |
Building A |
0.5 Sec |
We know Height of building is directly proportional to the time period, so as height increases defiantly Time will increases. |
|
|
Building B |
1.03 Sec |
|
|
|
Building F |
1.73 Sec |

|
|
Building H |
4.41 Sec |
|
|
Effect of Column Orientation on time period |
Building B |
1.02 Sec |
Column Orientation are create effect on flexible behavior of the Building. |
|
Building C |
1.145 Sec |

Conclusion |
|
Effect of Flexural Stiffness of structural elements on mode Shapes. |
Building B |
Flexural Stiffness of beams close to nil. |
2.62 Sec |
If we don’t consider stiffness property of beam it increases time period (almost double). |
|
Full Flexural Stiffness of beams. |
1.02 Sec |
|||
|
Effect of Axial Stiffness of Vertical Members on mode shapes |
Building H |
Axial Cross Section for columns is close to nil. |
5.99 Sec |
Axial Cross section of the columns plays vital load in time period.
|
|
Full axial cross section |

|
Effect of Degree of fixity at column base on mode shape. |
Building B |
Column Support Pinned |
1.02 Sec |
More the fixity of the column lesser the time period. |
|
Column Support Fixed |
0.941 Sec |
