Ans Q2: Details for the Awarding the Contract:
2 A. Considerations for Design and Construction:
- Safety of People
Commuters and employees in a railway station are often in a haste giving very little thought to their and others’ safety, making it more important for the architect to ensure passenger safety isn’t compromised at any stage. To design a safe and secure railway station building, the architect should first study the passenger flow through the railway station, the way people access the platforms to board and alight from the trains, the views railway employees have and must have.
- Sensitive and Inclusive Features
Several differently-abled people and elderly people depend on the railway for commuting to work every day, therefore railway station design must make the stations complex more inclusive and accessible to these people.
- Usability of the Station
Observational studies to measure and evaluate the usability of the railway station building can be conducted to make necessary changes and enhance user experience. Accessible and inclusive sanitary arrangements are a must; bathrooms, refreshment rooms, waiting rooms and retiring rooms are key to a comfortable station building.
- Efficiency of the Station
Railway station buildings are the bottlenecks for rail transport as it is where trains merge and diverge. Several activities such as passenger boarding, unloading and loading of goods, alighting and interchanging, train formation, maintenance, and technical checks are done here. The number of platforms is limited and it is thus important to plan and execute all these tasks efficiently.
- Public Requirements
A railway station requires a comfortable and efficient booking office for tickets, a platform for unloading and loading goods, and for passengers to board or get off the train. A minimum platform covering is essential for a railway station, efficient lighting systems for night times will help enhance safety, security, and comfort; proper arrangement for drinking water is another essential feature. A public telephone, microphones to announce the arrival and departure of trains are other key features which the building design must take into account.
- Traffic Requirements
Arrangements must be made for booking tickets and for issuing luggage labels and goods receipts. Lifts and sidings must be constructed, and platforms must be designed for handling goods, and a way for controlling and reporting the movement of trains using signals should be made.
- Requirements of the Locomotive Department
Arrangements for supplying fuel and water to locomotives should be made, and a facility should be designed for maintaining and inspecting the locomotives.
- Accessibility
Easily accessible roads, subways, and pathways should be available towards the railway station building from the surrounding localities, hotels, malls, and parks. Footbridges connecting various platforms should be designed. When the city’s Metro rail or MRTS is integrated with the station building, it is of great advantage in terms of access.
- General Requirement
Giant clocks displaying the correct time should be provided in and around the railway station building, A guide map of the town or city, especially in case of tourist spots and business hubs, boards to show the timetable of the trains departing and arriving, taxi services, police stations and help desks to help the passengers and to avoid any violation, a train inquiry office, boards showing reservation charts, eateries, and parking lots are other significant features the railway station design must include.
- Geotechnical Studies
Soil study plays an important role in designing the foundation for the abutment or pier and the method of execution.
- Social Studies
City’s population has to be calculated for the future and the data has to be incorporated for the design purpose to select the types and number of cars say for example.
- Salient Features:
For signalling, telecommunication, track works, architectural perspective respective parameters has to be considered for the design and construction.
- Resources
To execute the works inclusive of civil, mechanical, electrical, signalling etc.., it should be checked for the adequate resources say manpower, materials, equipment, finance, tools etc..,

6D. Economic Order Quantity
Economic order quantity (EOQ) is a calculation companies perform that represents their ideal order size, allowing them to meet demand without overspending. Inventory managers calculate EOQ to minimize holding costs and excess inventory.
- Economic order quantity is a metric that represents the ideal order size to minimize costs for the business.
- Economic order quantity is a useful formula for businesses of all sizes and types that order and hold inventory.
- Inventory management systems and ERP systems can automate economic order quantity calculations, so your business makes the best, most informed decisions regarding orders and inventory management.
Formula for Economic Order Quantity is given by
Economic Order Quantity, EOQ = √2NA/CI
where N – Total units required per year
A – Cost of each order
C – Cost of each unit
I - Annual Cost Carrying Percentage
Benefits of Economic Order Quantity
The main benefit of using EOQ is improved profitability. Here’s a list of benefits that all add up to savings and improvements for your business:
- Improved Order Fulfilment:When you need a certain item or something for a customer order, optimal EOQ ensures the product is on hand, allowing you to get the order out on time and keep the customer happy. This should improve the customer experience and may lead to increased sales.
- Less Overordering:An accurate forecast of what you need and when will help you avoid overordering and tying up too much cash in inventory.
- Less Waste:More optimized order schedules should cut down on obsolete inventory, particularly for businesses that hold perishable inventories that can result in dead stock.
- Lower Storage Costs:When your ordering matches your demand, you should have less products to store. This can lower real estate, utility, security, insurance and other related costs.
- Quantity Discounts:Planning and timing your orders well allows you to take advantage of the best bulk order or quantity discounts offered by your vendors.

- Tunnel Boring Machine
- Blasting Equipment
7B Own/Hire Analysis:
It is given with the criteria that site has its 50% of the required equipment/machineries. So, rest of the equipment/machineries required for the site will be taken on owning basis. Since, the contractor is going to take the same kind of projects in the future then owning the equipment/machineries will be the best option. Making it as one time investment will make the contractor beneficial. Advantages of owning the equipment is given as follows:
There are several advantages of buying equipment outright. It means you:
- fully owns the asset - unless you have used it as security for a loan
- is treated as the owner for tax purposes and can claim capital allowances
- will pay less overall than you would through a lease or hire purchase agreement
- remains Competitive
Key Factor to be considered while buying the new equipment:
Research
If we are looking to make a new purchase, we will need to research the product before purchasing it to make sure it will be suitable for our business’s needs. If there are other industries that have purchased the same equipment it may be beneficial to talk to them about the equipment, what they like about it and if there have been any issues with it.
When researching it is important to define your needs and what the business needs. This will help you decide whether it is a necessary purchase or whether there could be a different alternative.
Check the supplier’s reputation
It is crucial to buy equipment from a reputable supplier. Take the time to speak with a number of suppliers and ask as many questions as you can to get the necessary information, we need to make an informed decision. It may be beneficial to use a local supplier as it improves flexibility, provides control and has less supply chain costs.
Assess the needs
When purchasing new equipment for business it is important to consider what our business actually needs. Look into whether it will be more beneficial for business to purchase new equipment or second hand.
It is important to look into how reliable the equipment is, whilst weighing up whether you would be better off leasing, hiring, or purchasing the equipment.
Consider the budget
When considering the budget, it is a good idea to reflect on the qualities the equipment brings to the business. These may consist of reliability, capacity, efficiency, environmental impacts, and quality of performance.
Maintenance Cost
Maintenance is another factor to take into consideration. It is important to understand the cost involved in running the equipment and maintaining it, and whether we are able to afford the maintenance costs.
Depreciation Rate
All equipment and machinery will lose its value over time. This means that when purchasing equipment or machinery think about how long it will last while giving you a high level of value. It is beneficial to look at the materials used and whether or not its structure can withstand the elements, stress and strain of the workplace.
Things that are considered to own the equipment rather than hiring:
Evaluate Initial Investment Costs
Financing should be one of the top considerations when making an equipment purchase. With new equipment, there may be very low financing costs made available when the manufacturer offers “0% down” or makes another low financing incentive to a buyer.
Determine Productivity Yield
Production output. Some would argue that price is the most important factor, but a major consideration should be if the equipment’s productivity can outweigh how much the equipment costs in the long run. A machine’s return of investment and expected length of optimal performance are key considerations when making an equipment purchase.
Review Maintenance Costs
When buying equipment, it’s important to consider how it might affect our bottom line. Some types of equipment require lots of regular and expensive maintenance. Other types of equipment might not last very long. In Marketing one of our most valuable equipment is our computers. As technology continues to develop at a fast rate, computers also become obsolete at even faster rates. So, it’s important to research before you buy. You can get more bang for your buck for a relatively long time when you choose a newer model.
Examine Necessity of Equipment
Does the equipment replace manpower? It is important to optimize our manufacturing process as best as possible, but only if it will increase productivity and serve as an addition freeing up hands better suited for other tasks. Often, businesses can purchase loads of equipment they don’t necessarily need, and it ends up taking up much-needed space. Assuming it is resourceful and something your business requires, make sure you consider a warranty and the training involved as well when assessing the total cost.
Assess Life Span
One thing to consider when making any sort of purchase that’ll help us to improve our business to cater our future needs. Now, this isn’t just considering how we might need it in the future, but how you might not need it in the future. For example, purchasing software/equipment that’ll soon be irrelevant to our business processes isn’t going to help us, much like purchasing software too early will be wasting our money now, and will prevent us from spending it where it’s needed most. Proceeding cautiously can greatly benefit us for both short- and long-term goals, and will give you room to adjust if you suddenly need to.
Look into Daily Usage
When we are looking to make an equipment purchase, one of the things that many people try to do is to save money by trying to find the cheapest deal possible. And while buying the lowest priced model can save you a significant amount of money in the short term, it is a decision that could end up costing you a lot more money in the long haul. This is most applicable to those purchasing equipment that will play an important part in the daily operation and workflow of a business. For instance, it could be buying PCs for a corporate office, high-end heating machines for a hairdresser, or ovens for a restaurant. Since equipment like these are used on a daily basis, they are worth spending that extra bit of money on the best models available. After all, if you end up buying the cheaper end model and it ends up breaking down within a short period of time, then you either have to pay for repairs or even worse, buy even more new equipment.
Consider Safety Precautions
When purchasing equipment for business, a very important consideration to make is how that equipment is going to affect employee safety. Employees’ safety in a company should always be at the top of your mind, and if bringing in new equipment is going to pose a potential threat to their safety, you might want to reconsider or will need to update certain protocols for using that equipment. Neglecting this consideration is not only dangerous for your employees but could result in a massive lawsuit which could result in your company closing down. Take it very seriously, and you’ll run a more efficient and safer workplace.
Make Adaptable Purchases
Predict the future, or at least try to. Anytime if we are making a big-ticket purchase, whether it’s for personal or business purposes, we want to make sure it will be nimble enough to adapt to potential, unforeseen events or changes that may take place. For example, try to plan ahead to make sure that equipment doesn’t become obsolete too quickly, retains resale value, can be used for additional use cases or purposes, and won’t become anything but a depreciating, useless liability.
