Modelling and simulation of flow through a flowbench

AIM:- To create a 3D model of FLOWBENCH and run flow analysis.

INTRODUCTION:- In this project I am going to obtain lift vs mass flow rate plot and perform the grid dependency test & observe the effect of valve lift on mass flow rate.

THEORY: An airflow bench is a device used for testing the internal aerodynamics quality of an engine component. It is primarily used for testing the intake and exhaust ports of cylinder heads in an I.C Engine.

PROCEDURE:-

First of all I created a 3D flowbench with inlet port, cylinder outlet and an opening & closing valve.

Then created lids across inlet port and outlet of cylinder. And run flow simulation wizard while stting Inlet total pressure and outlet statics Pressure and set goals to mass flow rate and velocity with global goas and surface goals and cut plots.

Then added new parametric study and added dimension parameter run analysis.

OBSERVATION:-

GRID DEPENDENCY TEST:- I performed grid dependency test with mesh refinement of 3,4 & 5.

OUTPUTS and PLOTS:

For a valve lift of 2 mm

For a valve lift of 3 mm

For a valve lift of 4 mm

For a valve lift of 5 mm

GRAPH SHOWING MASS FLOW RATE AT DIFFERENT VALVE LIFTS

FLOW TRAJECTORIES:

RESULT:- From the study of valve lift analysis, it is observed that the value of the mass flow rate of air leaving the outlet cylinder surface increases as the valve lift at the cylinder inlet increases. The negative sign of the mass flow rate indicates that the air is leaving the cylindrical domain.
