Centrifugal pump design and analysis

AIM:-

To create a 3D model of a centrifugal pump, run a baseline flow simulation and perform a parametric studies for different velocities design point.

INTRODUCTION:-

In this project I am going to run a simulation of water flowing through a centrifugal pump with different velocities at outlet and inlet atmospheric pressure condition and perform a parametric study with animation of flow pattern.

THEORY:-

A centrifugal pump is a mechanical device which is used to transport fluids by the conversion of rotational kinetic energy to hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow. Impellar is the main part and play a vital role in its working.

Pressure ratio is the ratio between the outlet pressure and inlet pressure.

Thus, ‘Pressure ratio’ = outlet total pressure / inlet total pressure

PROCEDURE:

Input parameters for baseline simulation:

Analysis type = Internal flow

Working fluid = water

Flow type = laminar and turbulent

Rotation type = local region averaging

Boundary condition at inlet = atmospheric pressure

Boundary condition at outlet = Exit velocity is 10 m/s

First of all, I created a 3D model of the centrifugal pump with rotor, then added lids to inlet and outlet. Then ran simulation wizard with above stated input parameters. Rotating region is added and rotational speed was set to 1000 rpm. Surface goal was set to Avg. total pressure and the number of iterations was set at 500.

Relationship between ‘pressure ratio’ and ‘mass flow rate’

NOTE:- negative (-) sign indicates that water is leaving the domain at outlet.

RESULT:-

Upon simulation and performing parametric studies for different outlet flow rate it is found that as the inlet condition is same in all the cases i.e. atmospheric pressure, but as the output flow rate is increased from 10 to 15 to 20 and so on, outlet pressure decreased thus pressure ratio also decreased.
