Modelling and simulation of flow through a flowbench
AIM:-Modelling and stimulating the flow through a flowbench for valve lift.
PRINCIPLE:-Valves are mostly used in vehicles. They are used to to a create a situation so that fuel, air enters only for a certain period of prescribed time. They are used to regulate the flow of air, fuel into combustion chamber. The valve lift takes place due to differnce in pressure at inlet and inside the combustion cylinder. The pressuree at the inlet of the combustion cylinder i.e inlet should be higher and inside the combustion chamber it should be less due to this pressure drop the flow of air ,fuel takes place.
MODELLING :-
Creting 3-D model of combustion chamber and inlet,valve:-
- Select the front plane and draw a circle of required diameter.
- Exit the sketch and extrude it to required height.
- Then with help of shell command make the cylinder hollow.
- Now use leads to close the opening ,endings of the comnustion chamber so as to make it water tight.
- Now selct the front plane and draw sketch of bend pipe like thing so it forms the inlet to combustion chamber.
- Now make a plane at the end of this bend pipe like sketch and draw a circle of required diameter.
- Now usind sweep command form the inlet to combustion chamber.
- Now choosing reference geometry draw an axis at the end of the inlet section so as to draw a valve.
- Now with reference to the axis draw valve sketch ,now using reveolve command form the valve.
- This results in 3-D model of combustion chamber ,valve lift, inlet.
FLOW STIMULATION:-
- Create new wizard and select air as the flow fluid .
- Now giving boundary condition as total pressure at inlet, static pressure at oulet.
- Now select global plot and ensure that surface massflow rate, global mass flow rate.
- Now run the basic study after setting the mesh size as 5.
- After completing the stimulation create the cutplots of velocity ,pressure.
- Now perform a paramteric study giving the inout as dimension of the valve from the surface of the combustion chamber.
- Now modify the valve lift with range with number option so to obtain various valve positions .
- Now select the cutplots, global plots as otput paramters.
- Now run the study to get desired outputs.
- Now perform the same for mesh size 6,7.

- Obtained massflow rate plots,cutplots of velocity,pressure.
- Created animations.
- Compared massflow rate for various mesh levels.
- Obatined flow trajectories.
