PROGRAM TO CALCULATE DRAG FORCE USING MATLAB.

1. AIM:-Program to calculate drag force against a Cyclist.

2. GOVERNING EQUATION:-

  • F_d=rho*v^2*a*c_d/2Fd=rho∗v2∗a∗cd/2
  • Where F_dFd =Drag force
  • units:-NN
  • rho=density of medium through which cyclist is travelling(air)
  • units:-kg/m^3 kg/m3
  • a=frontal area
  • units:- m^2m 2
  • v=velocity with which cyclist moves
  • units:- m/sm /s
  • c_dcd
    =drag coefficient
  • units:-no units PRINCIPLE:- When the cyclist began to ride his velocity began to increase and the air/fluid around him began
  • to increase proportionally. When the air which is flowing through the projected area of both cycle and cyclist is having some kinetic energy before it has come into contact with the cycle and the person. As soon as the air comes into contact with both the person and the cycle the air suddenly losses kinetic energy and converts into pressure energy. As pressure increases according to the geometry pressure varies .If the geometry is irregular the boundary layer separation takes place and creates a back pressure because of which turbulence is created. So to reduce this body must be streamlined or high energy particles are to be added to delay the boundary layer separation

3. OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:-

  1. To calculate the drag force.
  2. To plot Velocity vs Drag force.
  3. To plot Drag Co-efficient vs Drag force.

4. CODE :-

CODE FOR VARIATION OF VELOCITY AND DRAG FORCE

OUPUT:-

CODE FOR VARIATION OF C_d AND DRAG FORCE

OUTPUT:-

5. EXPLANATION OF THE CODE:

  1. First initialize the values of rho, frontal area,c_d,varying velocity.
  2. Substitute those values in the force drag equation to calculate drag force.
  3. Then plot a graph between velocity and drag force.
  4. For second case initialize the values of rho, frontal area, varying c_d, velocity.
  5. Substitute those values in the force drag equation to calculate drag force.
  6. Then plot a graph between c_D and drag force.

6.CONCLUSION:-

  1. Calculated drag force with varying velocity and c_d.
  2. Plotted the graphs between velocity vs drag force and c_d vs drag force.
