Modelling and simulation of flow through a flowbench
AIM : Modelling and simulation of flow through a flowbench.
OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT:
Our main objective is to :
1. Perform grid dependence test for three grids after that running simulation at a particular valve lift and explaining the results.
2. Effect of valve lift on mass flow rate
3. Decide the best grid, run a parametric sweep to show the effect of valve lift on mass flow rate.
ABOUT AIR FLOW BENCH:
An air flow bench is a device used for testing the internal aerodynamics qualities of an engine component. It is used primarily for testing the intake and exhaust ports of cylinder heads of IC engines. It is also used to test the flow capabilities of any component such as air filters, carburetors, manifolds or any other part that is required to flow gas. A flow bench is one of the primary tools of high performance engine builders.
PROCEDURE FOR THIS PROJECT:
- Designing the 3D model of valve , cylinder and inlet port.
- Applying constraints to the valve geometry and making one dimesion driving so that we can varry valve lift.
- Saving the parts and applying flow simulation to it.
- Creating wizard for the flow.
- Applying boundary condition. At inlet giving total pressure of 101325 Pa. At outlet applying static pressure of 41325 Pa.
- Creating global mesh.
- Creating local mesh for the over the valve.
- Defining surface goals which is mass flow rate at outlet of cylinder.
- Applying cut plot for the velocity.
- Running the flow simulation.
3D MODEL OF THE FLOW BENCH:
GRID DEPENDENCY TEST FOR THREE DIFFERENT MESH:
1. For grid setting 4, valve lift 4mm.
2. For grid setting 5, valve lift 4mm.
3. For grid setting 6, valve lift 4mm.
Mass Flow Rate:
Grid setting : 4 5 6
Mass flow rate[kg/s] : -0.0343 -0.0313 -0.0303
From this we can see that as the mesh size increases the valves obtain for mass flow rate decreases giving the more accurate valve. Therefore selecting the mesh size of 6 for our study to see the change in mass flow rate with the valve lift.( Negative mass flow rate is due to the fluid leaving the system ).
PERFORMING NEW PARAMETERIC STUDY FOR DIFFERENT VALVE LIFT:
In this geometry the valve was fully closed at 2.011 mm so choosing this valve as our first valve and taking eight design point for our study.
1. For valve lift of 2.011 mm:
2. For valve lift of 2.86657143 mm:
3. For valve lift of 3.72214286 mm:
4. For valve lift of 4.57771429 mm:
5. For valve lift of 5.43328571 mm:
6. For valve lift of 6.28885714 mm:
7. For valve lift of 7.14442857 mm:
8. For valve lift of 8 mm:
PLOT OF VALVE LIFT VS MASS FLOW RATE:
RESULTS:
From the graph we conclude that as the valve lift increases mass flow rate also increases with it .
CONCLUSION :
- I have done the design and analysis of flowbench successfully.
