MBD Simulation on IC Engine Valve Train

Aim :- To create the components of IC Engine Valve Train.

The components used in this are as follows:-

1) Cam :- A Camshaft is a device to convert the rotational motion into reciprocating motion actuates at the inlet and exhaust value of the cylinder.

2) Rocker arm :- It is an oscillating lever that conveys radial movement from the cam lobe into linear movement at the poppet valve to open it. One end is raised and lowered by a rotating lobe of the camshaft while the other end acts on the valve stem.

3) Push Rod :- it is a rod that pushes the rocker arm by actuating by a cam to open or close the valve of ic engine.

4) Valve mount :- It is used to support the vale to move in correct direction and spring is attached to it.

5) Valve :- it is located at the engine head. It's main function is to control the incoming of lnlet and outgoing at the exhaust. Fuel is allowed to at the inlet port(inlet valve) and fuel is exhausted at the outlet port.

Assembly :-

Sl.No CAM Lift (mm) Speed (RPM) Material
1 3.5 1500 Cast Carbon Steel
2 6 1500

Cast Carbon Steel

For 1 Cam lift 3.5 mm at speed 1500 RPM

R1 = 12.5mm dia(25mm)

R2 = 5mm dia (10mm)

CAM LIFT = (L - R1)+R2
    3.5  = (L - 12.5)+ 5
   3.5-5 =  L-12.5
   12.5+1.5 = L
          L = 11

for 2 Cam lift 6mm at speed of 1500 RPM

R1 = 12.5mm dia(25mm)

R2 = 5mm dia (10mm)

CAM LIFT = (L - R1)+R2
    6    = (L - 12.5)+ 5
   6 - 5 =  L-12.5
   12.5+1 = L
          L = 13.5

First we have to create the components according to the dimensions

Assemble the components

then create two cams of 6mm lift and 3.5 mm lift.

fix the input motor at an rpm of 1500 in these cases. mount the spring constant of 10 N/mm and free len as 45mm.

Motion study properties as 7200 frames per second and use precise contact.

contact type as solid for ic engine and material as cast Carbon Steel.

Calculate the analysis.

For 1 Cam lift At 3.5 mm at speed 1500 RPM

Linear displacement at 3.5mm cam lift

Contact force between cam and push rod (3.5mm)

contact forces between Push rod and rocker arm (3.5mm)

contact force between rocker arm and valve Magnitude (3.5mm)

contact force between rocker arm and valve in X direction

CAM LIFT 3.5MM

for 2 Cam lift 6mm at speed of 1500 RPM

Linear displacement at 6mm lift

contact force between cam and push rod 6mm

Contact force between Push rod and rocker arm 6mm

Contact force between rocker arm and Valve 6mm (Magnitude)

Contact force between rockerarm and Valve 6mm X Direction.

Cam lift at 6MM

Linear displacement increases with increase in cam lift valve lift depends on the design of cam.

contact forces between valve and rocker arm X- Direction force give contact force only in x direction.

Magnitude gives net contact forces in all direction therefore valve is higher than in x - direction.
