MBD Simulation on a Piston Assembly

* images and plots in the doc file attached

Piston Assembly

Aim : To model and assembly piston assembly and subject it to given condition and obtain required plots.

Introduction: Piston motion analysis in the study of the reciprocating motion of the piston in the cylinder and the motion of the assembly. This motion is widely used in all internal combustion vehicle.
this mechanism is used to convert reciprocating motion into rotatory motion.

Parts required are

  • Piston head
  • Connecting rod
  • Gudgeon pin
  • End cap
  • Crank

Conditions
1 – 0 mm offset
2 – 10 mm offset (positive)
3 – 10 mm offset (negative)

Parts required

Piston Head
It is the part the undergoes reciprocating motion, and slides in the cylinder. It has hole for gudgeon pin and slots for piston rings

Gudgeon Pin
It is required to mate the connecting rod to piston.

Connecting Rod
it is the part that undergoes to and fro motion and helps in connecting piston to crank shaft

End Cap
It is used to fixate connecting rod and crankshaft

Crank
Is responsible for the conversion of reciprocating motion into rotatory motion and has a connection for drive shaft

Procedure -
Create above mentioned 3D parts using the dimensions mentioned

Use assembly mode to assemble the part

Float the first part

Apply the required constraints ( in 3 conditions specified )

Simulate at 2000 RPM and 3600 frames per second

Condition 1 ( 0 mm Offset )

Condition 2 ( 10 mm Offset ) (positive)

Condition 3 ( 10 mm Offset ) (negative)

Plots

For center axis

For +ve offset of 10 mm

For -ve offset of 10 mm

Super imposed graph

Observation -
the linear displacement is smooth in all 3 cases

All 3 cases have a slight delay in phases as position of crank is different

The center position has the highest displacement of 307 mm to 302 mm of the offsets
both offset has same value for the displacement , but different values of speed at TDC
