Identification of Cracks
1) Observations:- i) Depth of Beam is more than the width of beam.
ii) Reinforcement is exposed to the environment which is not good bcoz corrosion will exposed in all.
iii) Failure is due to formation of plastic hinges at end of the support.
iv) Concrete is damage due to greater tension force in the bottom of the beam.
v) The Anchorage length provided is sufficient to transfer the load from beam to column.
Answer:- i) Due to failure in part at end of the support, it can be repairable.
ii) We can apply the mortar to unexposed or cover the failure surface by mix with proper chemicals bonding to the mortar.
2) Observations:- i) The bonding between the beam and column is not proper.
ii) Insufficient Anchorage length is provided in the beam.
iii) Due to insufficient anchorage, length beam and column is not acting as a single unit.
iv) Since, the load carried by the beam is not much more that's why it's exposed only in outer surface.
v) Casting is not done properly.
Answer:- i) It is hard to repair, but it can be repairable.
ii) Concrete is not crushed fully.
iii) Slab also developed more craked along the beam width direction.
3) Observations:- i) Cracks are developed at the joint of column and beam.
ii) Slab also developed more cracks along the beam width direction.
Answer:- i) It is a plastic hinge failure.
ii) The repeated loading & stress led to these damage.
iii) These can be repairable.
4) Observations:- i) Concrete damaged at the top of the column.
ii) Concrete damage all around the column face.
iii) Beam is safe bcoz the width of the beam is less.
vi) Since, there is not any wall that means it is at ground floor or open floor.
Answer:- i) It is a plastic hinge failure.
ii) The repeated loading & stress led to these type of damage.
iii) It can be repairable.
iv) These cracks is happened due to infill walls at ground floor.
5) Observations:- i) Concrete failed all over the column face.
ii) Spacing provied for ties is maximum.
iii) Longitudinal reinforcement are intact.
Answer:- i) These failure is due to shear failure in column.
ii) Due to high compression resisted by column it may be failed in column buckling.
iii) It cant be repaired.
iv) If it is repaired thereafter the load carrying capacity of column is very low and column again fail in buckling.
6) Observations:- i) Since, the column is completely failed.
ii) The alignment of point load is not in proper manner.
iii) Temporary support are provided to the slab by using wooden props.
iv) Column are separated from the beam.
Answer:- i) The cracks cant be repaired.
ii) These failure is occurs when we give additional load to the column in mid height of its length.
iii) Since, Slab is directly rested on the column. it is Structurally unsafe.
