Hood design-Week 2

HOOD DESIGN

HOOD:- Hood is an essential part of a vehicle the first thing that comes under contact while any crash happen is hood . It covers the engine compartment,

Hood also reduce the impact of force while crash happen .

How it reduce force or impact ?

Basically hood made of two major part

  1. Outer panel
  2. Inner panel

Outer panel:- its is upper most surface of hood which can seen from outside.

Inner panel:- its under outer panel which strengthen the hood . design of hood decide the strength of hood and reducing force capacity . it design in such way that all the force coming from outside body will change its direction towards the hinge . so that driver & passenger don’t feel any kind of injury.

Components of hood

1.latch trajectory :- The opening and closing of hood path is latch trajectory. The opening angle varies from region to region so it may not touch the head of a person while opening it . for example , an average height of a person in india is 5.5 ft so the hood opening should in such way that the it will not touch head the person while open it .

2.Mastic data :- mastic is glue which use to join inner panel to outer panel. It reduce the NVH of vehicle . while designing the hood we should given space for mastic of minimum 5 mm and also give patch for mastic of radius of 5 mm.

  1. Emboss :- emboss are basically punching on sheet . design the emboss in such way that it increase the strength of hood , the edges of design emboss should towards the outer side of hood or towards the hinge so all the force will exerted towards it.
  2. Hemming :- hemming is process of joining of inner panel to outer panel without doing any welding or such things like that . the edge of outer panel bend and wrap around the inner panel , in between mastic is also apply to reduce NVH

Dimensions of hood :- hood always design under the consideration of master section,

Draft angle :- ≥7 ˚

Radius of emboss :- ≥ 5 mm

Distance between each emboss :- ≥10 mm
