Hood design-Week 2
Hood Design Report
1. Introduction
This report presents the complete design of a vehicle hood assembly, including the outer panel, inner panel,
latch, hinges, and reinforcements. The design has been developed using industry best practices and follows
the Master Section parameters provided.
2. Hood Design Overview
The hood is a critical front-end component that serves both functional and aesthetic purposes. It protects the
engine components while also enhancing aerodynamics and vehicle styling.
3. Thickness Information
- Outer Panel: 0.75 mm
- Inner Panel: 0.75 mm
- Reinforcements: 1.5 mm
These thicknesses were chosen based on strength, manufacturability, and weight considerations.
4. Master Section Reference
The hood design was guided by the provided master section with detailed dimensions and radii. Sharp
corners were filleted, and reliefs were introduced to avoid stress concentrations during stamping.
5. Hemming Data
A 3 mm hemming area was maintained around the edge of the hood to join the inner and outer panels.
Hemming ensures stiffness and safety while also enabling aesthetic edge finishes.
6. Relief Areas
Two types of reliefs were incorporated:
- Rear relief
- Front relief
These areas prevent material thinning and tearing during deep drawing.
7. Components Description
- Hood Outer Panel: The visible upper layer of the hood, designed for aerodynamic flow and aesthetics.
- Hood Inner Panel: Provides structural integrity and supports latch and hinge mountings.
- Reinforcements: Located near latch and hinges to distribute load and prevent deformation.
- Latch: Enables locking mechanism.
- Hinges: Facilitate opening and closing of the hood.
8. Latch Trajectory
Latch movement is defined based on the rotation of the hood around the hinges. The striker aligns with the
latch mechanism along a predefined trajectory, ensuring secure closure.
9. Mastic Data
Mastic sealants were applied between the inner and outer panels to dampen vibration and reduce NVH
(Noise, Vibration, and Harshness).
10. Emboss Definitions
Emboss features are added on the inner panel to enhance stiffness and reduce vibrations. These are created
based on simulations of stress distribution.
11. Manufacturing Process
The main processes used are:
- Deep Drawing: Forms the base shape of the panels.
- Trimming and Piercing: Remove excess material and create openings.
- Hemming: Joins outer and inner panels together.
- Spot Welding: Used in reinforcement areas.
12. Conclusion
The hood design successfully meets the structural and aesthetic requirements. It adheres to design standards and is manufacturable with common automotive fabrication techniques.
