Hood design-Week 2

Hood is a opening body panel that covers engine in front engine vehicle. The hood is a another type of door in vehicle that consist of outer panel and inner panel. The outer panel functions as a metal cover whereas the inner panel provides strength to the hood system. There are various design made as per the requirement and costing of the vehicle to provide strength and asthetic looks. The inner panel contains of striker and hinge assembly.

Striker is the lock system in inner panel which is used for opening and closing of the hood system. The striker which is also known as Hood latch is durable steel construction guards against body damage eusures that vehicles won't unexpectedly open while driving. The hinge in a hood compartment plays an important role. Without the hinge there is no open and close movement.

Mastic is an organic glue madeup of sticky resin. It is available in the form of thin liqiud, thick glue or sticky paste. Mastic are applied to the particular mastic points on an inner panel. The heat is applied to the mastic then. The mastic grows upto 5mm towards the outer panel fixing both surfaces. Each mastic can improve the strength locally and spread in 60 to 80 mm surrounding area. It will also improve the NVH characteristics in engine compartment. All the noise, vibrations are absorbed by the mastic.

Embossing is a metal forming process for producing designin sheet materials by means of roller dies by passing sheet or strip of metal between rolls of desired pattern. Heming is used to join the inner and outer closure panels together. It is the process of bending or folding the flange of outer panel over the flange of inner panel. The accuracy of the operation affects the apperance of car's outer surface and is therefore a critical factor in the final quality of a finished vehicle.
