Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus :

The ratio of moment of inertia about the neutral axis to the distance 'y' from the neutral axis to the extreme layer of the section it is termed as section modulus or modulus of section. It is denoted by 'Z'.

Z = I / Ymax

Where, Z = Section modulus

I = M.I about neutral axis or axis passing through centroid of the section.

Ymax = Distance from neutral axis to extreme layer of the section.

Unit of Z : mm^3, cm^2, m^3

Case 1 Case 2

I = 2.51*10^5 mm^4 y= 452.77mm I = 2.587*10^5 mm^4 y= 452.77mm

Z1 =I/Y, Z1 = 2.51*10^5 / 452.77 Z1= 554.36mm^3 Z2 = I/Y, Z2 = 2.587*10^5 / 452.77 Z2= 571.37mm^3

By substracting case1 and case2, 571.37 - 554.36 = 17.01 mm^3

Conclusion : By comparing case1 and case2 we get difference of 17.01mm^3.
