Hood design-Week 2
HOOD DESIGN
Introduction
Hood is a part of the car that covers the engine in the front engine vehicle. It is the opening body panel of the car, it consist of inner panel and outer panel . Inner panel helps to give strenght to the hood and outer pannel is just the outer metal cover of the hood. It is the most important component of BIW (Body In White). In these both the panels are hemmed together to form automotive hood assembly.

OBJECTIVE OF HOOD DESIGN
Check the given surface wheather there is any discontinuities.
Develop the inner pannel with the help of given surface.
Develop the requried reinforcement for the inner pannel.
Develop the embosses for the inner pannel.
Develop the outer pannel with the help of given surface.
Develop the hem for thr outer pannel.
Position of the Latch should be perpendicular to the hinge axis.
Check the feasibility of both the pannels by Draft Analysis.
DESIGN METHODOLOGY

DESIGN OF INNER PANNEL
Inner panel plate
Create the plate with the help of given surface and by the reference of the mastersection. Work on the half part of the hood so that it will be easy. Maintain the tree structure of the inner pannel so that it will be easy to understand.

Embosses and mastics of inner pannel
The embosses are design on the inner pannel. The direction of the embosses should be outside like V OR Y shape so that it reduces the impact force which protect the passenger during the crash or accident. The embosses shape is mostly depend on the CAE team. Embosses also remove the material from the the hood that reduces the weight.

The mastics helps to avoid the vibration and noise of the bonet. The important function of the mastic is to connect the inner pannel and outer pannel with the help of mastic glue.

Hinge and Latch
Latch should always perpendicular to the hinge axis. From the center of the hinge axis we draw a big circle to the position where we need the latch to be placed, after that we draw a line that is tangent to the circle at that point and place where the latch is located. The other major function is opening and closing the hood.

Slot
These slot is build for the passing of the wipper spray pipe.
OUTER PANNEL
Outer pannel is cover of the hood. It gives the clean look to the hood. Hemming is done on the outer pannel.

OUTER PANNEL CUTOUT
These cutout is done due to the overlapping of the flanges.

Reinforcement on the hood pannel
At some positions we need provide more strength in inner pannel as these areas are prone to loading and unloading. The latch is attached to the inner pannel and these adds more weight to the inner pannel at one particular point. These region is under stress whenever we closed the hood with force to lock the latch into the striker. We need to provide the reinforcement in these region to handle all the loading cases. In hinge we need to provide the reinforcement in order to strenghten the component and make the functioning smooth.
