Challenge

Foundation Design using SAFE

1.

Aim:

Model the isolated footing from previous challenge in SAFE

Procedure:

Step 1:

Setup a new model and select the isolated footing according to IS456:2000 using metric system

Step 2:

Define the materials

Step 3:

Define the slab properties

Step 4:

Define the soil subgrade properties using = Define >Spring properties > Area spring

Step 5:

Define the load cases and combination

Step 6:

Assign the following data

Step 7:

Analyze the model

Step 8:

Check the punching shear i.e it should be less than 1

Step 9:

Design the design strips

Result:

With this part 1 is completed

2.

Aim:

Model and design the pile cap using given data in SAFE

Procedure:

DATA PROVIDED:

Axial load = 1175KN

Length of pile = 16m

Dia.of pile = 500mm

Pile capacity = 200KN

No.of pile = 1175/200 = 5.875 = Assume 8 piles

Area of each pile = Π.d^2/4 = 196349.5 mm^2

E = 500 √Fck = 25000

Spring constant = 306.79KN/mm

Spacing of pile = 1250, Edge spacing = 500mm

Length = 5250mm, Width = 2750mm

Step 1:

Open new project with IS456:2000 recommendation

Step 2:

Define the materials

Step 3:

Define the slab

Step 4:

Define the soul subgrade

Step 5:

Define the load

Step 6:

Draw the piles

Using reference point, draw: piles, pilecap and column

Step 7:

Assign the following

Step 8:

Run the analysis

Step 9:

Check the punching shear

Step 10:

Draw the design strips

Result:

All the following design is done with reference to IS2911 and SP34
