Tap Hand Dryer
Design and Modelling of Tap Hand Dryer
Objective
- The main objective of this project is to improve the old design of hand dryer by using tools learned previously in the solidworks.
- To model and assemble the different parts of the hand dryer in solidworks.
- To create a photorealistic rendering of the hand dryer using photoview 360 and solidworks visualize.
Hand Dryer
- In this project I have designed the hand dryer by taking airblade tap hand dryer model as reference.
- The Airblade Tap Hand Dryer was designed and manufactured by dyson.
Improvement or Upgradation
- Adding another feature i.e. port for hand sanitizer.
- Design and implementation of hand sanitizer mechanism in hand dryer.
Modifications
- The size of the bottom unit in made bigger to hold another container for sanitizer.
- A compartment for 4th IR Sensor is created on top of the body unit.
- Tube or port for the sanitizer is created along with the water and air flow tube.
Part Modelling:
Part Modelling you can create a Part from a conceptual sketch through solid feature-based Modelling, as well as build and modify Parts through direct and intuitive graphical manipulation. It is also represented as a Virtual Prototype of an object.
Loft Surface:
Loft Surfaces are surfaces generated by multiple 3D Curves or existing edges creating a smooth tangency between the selected curves.
Sweep Surfaces:
Sweep surfaces are surfaces that are generated from a section curve positioned along a path.

Body:
The Body is the main and visible unit of the tap hand dryer, in which it contains sensor and port for water, air and sanitizer.
IR Sensor:
IR Sensor is used in this tap hand dryer to detect the human hand.
Tube Pipe:
The tube pipe is the link between the body of the tap hand dryer and the bottom unit in which it contains the house pipe of the air, wate and sanitizer.
Washer:
Washer is used in between the body and tube pipe.
Bush:
The work of the bush in the tap hand dryer is to hold the tube pipe without falling with the body and the bottom unit.
Bottom Unit:
The bottom unit is nothing but the container which contains the mother board, motor, air filter, sanitizer container and inlet port for water.
Motor:
The Dyson digital motor V4 is different from all other hand dryer motors. One of the world’s smallest fully integrated 1600W motor it does not use the old-fashioned carbon brushes, it uses digital pulse technology to spin up to three times faster than the conventional motors. The main work of the Dyson V4 Motor is to blow the clean air in a very short duration to dry the hand and it is achieved in 12-14 seconds.
Air Filter:
Air filter is used to filter the air going inside the motor. It contains carbon and cotton pads.
Bottom Unit Door:
Door for the bottom unit.
Motor Clamp:
In this assembly we have used motor clamp to mount the pump motor in the bottom unit.
Screw-Clamp, Screw-Motor Mount:
Screw is used to attach the two different parts into one or used to mount one part over the other one.
Impeller Casing:
It is the outer casing of the impeller through which the inlet and the outlet of sanitizer flow takes place.
Pump Motor, Impeller:
When the Pump Motor run the Impeller attached with the pump motor shaft rotates and the result will be the sanitizer is sucked from the container and pushed towards the body to tap hand dryer’s sanitizer outlet port.
Motorized Ball Valve:
Motorized ball valve is the part which controls the flow of the water to the tap hand dryer.
Tools Used to Model Tap Hand Dryer
The following are the tools used to model the tap hand dryer in solidworks.
- Sketch
- Extrude
- Revolve
- Swept
- Loft
- Dome
- Circular Pattern.
- Mirror
- Split
- Trim Entities.
- Convert Entities.
- Offset
- Fillet
- Chamfer
- Linear Pattern.
- Shell
- Thread
Sketch:
The sketch is the basis for a 3D model. Sketch is used to draw the two dimensional representation of the model with respect to the plane. In solidworks there are different sketch options available to create a sketch. These are known as entities. The following are the entities available in the solidworks – Line, Arc, Spline, Circle, Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon and Slot.
Extrude:
Extrude is one of the shaping tool available in solidworks. It is sub-divided into two types namely Extrude Base and Extrude Cut. Extrude Base is used to create a 2D sketch in to a 3D model and Extrude Cut is used to remove part from the 3D model using the 2D sketch.
Revolve:
Revolve is also same like Extrude tool but in this the 3D model is created from the 2D sketch with respect to the axis line. Revolve is of two types,
- Revolve Base.
- Revolve Cut.
Swept:
Creating a shape or object by moving a 2D sketch Profile along a 2D or 3D sketch Path is Swept. It of two types,
- Swept Base.
- Swept Cut.
Loft:
The Loft Feature in solidworks allows you to create a complex geometry in a single feature. It does this by interpolating surfaces between various cross-section of a model. These cross-sections can be sketches, faces or edges. In the loft interface, these cross-sections are considered as “loft profile”. It is of two types,
- Loft Base.
- Loft Cut.
Dome:
Dome is generally applied to give some shape to the flat faces. Select one or more planar or non-planar faces. You can apply dome to faces whose centroid lies outside the face. This allows you to apply dome to irregularly shaped contours. The great example of dome where fits well is the cupped bottom of the plastic bottle.
Circular or Linear Pattern:
Circular or Linear pattern is used to create a pattern of the selected object in a circular or Linear shape with respect to the reference. The parent bodies/ features are used to create a different number of instances required to create the pattern circularly.
Mirror:
By using mirror faces with a mid-plane selected only the chosen faces within the revolve will be mirrored. Mirroring bodies can be used whether in a single or multi body part and allows you to select solid geometry instead of the features and faces in a body.
Split:
In Solidworks Split Line tool is used to project an entity (sketch, solid, surface, face, plane, or surface spline) onto other surfaces or curved/planar faces. You are also able to split faces on multiple bodies with one command.
Trim Entities:
The trim tool type is selected based on the entities you want to trim or extend. All trim types are available with 2D sketches and 2D sketches on 3D planes. You can use any trim options and most commonly used option is Power trim.
Convert Entities:
Convert Entities is used to create/convert the specific sketch from the previous sketch.
Offset:
Offset one or more sketch entities, selected model edges, or model faces by a specified distance. For example, you can offset sketch entities such as splines or arcs, sets of model edges, loops, and so on. You can offset finite lines, arcs, and splines.
Fillet:
Fillet/Round creates a rounded internal or external face on the part. You can fillet all edges of a face, selected sets of faces, selected edges, or edge loops.
Chamfer:
A cut on the edge or corner of something that makes it slope slightly rather than being perfectly square is called Chamfer.
Assembly
Assembly is done in the assembly environment by inserting all the modelled parts of the Tap Hand Dryer using the insert part option.
Parts of the Tap Hand Dryer are fixed in the assembly using the mates-relations.
Mates
It creates geometric relationships between assembly components. As you add mates you define the allowable directions of linear or rotational motion of the components. You can move a component within its degree of freedom and can visualize the behaviour of assembly.
working of Tap Hand Dryer
The design of the Tap Hand Dryer consist of four IR Sensors, one near the water outlet port, two on the side walls of the Tap Hand Dryer and the last one on top of the structure. When the sensor near the water outlet port is sensed it send the signal to the Control Board which will send information to Ball Valve which will open the flow of water. After a predetermined time Ball Valve closes to restrict the flow of the water. Then, when the sensors on the side wall is sensed it send information to the Control Board and it direct the motor to blow a strong air. When the hand is sensed on top of the structure, sanitizer pump pumps the disinfectant through the outlet port.
Photorealistic rendering of Tap Hand Dryer
It is a process of creating a 3D model into a realistic image. The rendered image incorporates the appearances, lighting and scene included with the model.
Rendering in Solid works can be done in two ways:
