Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

  • Study about the different wheel arch gap standards.
  • Draw the lines at the required angle and points for the European standard.
  • Measure the distance at each angles and mention given model is pass or fail.

Wheel Arch :

It is a curved part of the fender positioned right above the wheel. The wheel Arch is designed such that it protects both the pedestrian and car cabin from mud, water rocks and other road spray. Different countries have different wheel arch regulations in place, and the wheel arch design has to comply with them to be deemed usable in that country.

Japan Regulations :

  • The clearance "L" for tire, hub, cap and fender is to be measured within area K and create clearance check chart to validate.
  • The value of L should be greater than 5mm at all positions.
  • Wheel guard requirement : The value of "a" should be more than 5mm at line 30degree forward and 50degree rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

European Regulations :

to pass the european standard for the wheel arch, first we have to study the europen standard wheel arch data shown below

  • The clearance "L" should be measured at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE and create clearance check chart to validate.
  • At all the five sections the value of L should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European Regulations.
  • Wheel guard requirement : The value of "a" should be more than 5mm at line 30degree forward and 50degree rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

US Regulations :

  • Clearance "L" is to be checked at all positions from -100degree to 100degree and create clearance check chart to validate.
  • The value of L should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations.
  • Wheel guard requirement : The value of "a" should be more than 5mm at line 30degree forward and 50degree rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

here , w have conditon was when we have create the line at certian angles and height then the gap for the fender and tyre should be equal to L or more than L

the L value is 10mm

now we have to create same in the provided model, shown below

now we need to create the point at the required places and start measuring ib between points

as per given model we have added the points as per the standard and try to claculated the gap between the fender and tyre

as per standars it has to clear 10mm in all areas but it was clearing at only one place

condition 1 : at all the sections the CL l value should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy european standards

it that our model is satisfying the one section only out of 4 section

Condition 2 : wheel gaurrd requmt the value of 'a' shall me more than the 5mm at a 30 degree line forward and 50 degree line backward.

in this condition at both places the values is more than the 5mm, here it is satifying the european standards

sections value
L VALUE FOR 150 HEIGHT LINE

5.997

FAIL
L VALUE FOR MIDDLE LINE 2.8852 FAIL
L VALUE FOR 50° 0.114 FAIL
L VALUE FOR 30° 10.013 PASS
A VALUE FOR 30° 44.7356 PASS
A VALUE FOR 50 ° 38.3660 PASS

Conclusion:

our model has to send back and try to change the fender design and wheel arch position as the L is not greater than 10mm in all sections to pass the europen standards.
