Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Wheel Arch
It is a curved part of the Fender positioned right above the Wheel.
The Wheel Arch is designed in such a way that it protects both the pedestrian and car cabin from mud, water rocks and other road sprays.
Different countries have different wheel arch regulations in place, and the wheel arch design must comply with them.
For avoiding design alterations of the same vehicle to meet the different regulations in different countries, the maximum values of the concerned regulation parameters are taken into consideration for design purpose.
Fender Wheel Arch Regulations
US Regulations

Clearance should be checked from -20 degree to 190 degree with a 10 degree of interval which should be greater than 5mm.
European Regulations

The clearance should be measured on above sections SA, SB, SC, SD and SE.
Clearance should be greater than 10mm at all these points.
Wheel Guard Requirement at SB and SC should be greater than 5mm from the central vertical axis of the wheel.
Japan Regulations

The clearance should be measured in the area K and should be greater than 5mm at all points.
Calculation of Wheel Arch Area according to European Standards
Obtaing the clearance 'L' at all the 5 points should be greater than 10mm.
Clearance at SA

L=10mm
Clearance at SB

L=9.94mm
Clearance at SC

L=0.11mm
Clearance at SD

L=2.84mm
Clearance at SE

L=5.9mm
Clearance vlaue'a' for Wheel Guard Requirement
At 30 degree line SA

a=44.75mm
At 50 degree line SC

a=38.37mm
CONCLUSION
From the above calculations, the fender does not pass the European Regulations.
