Fender Design

AIM: To design a half bumper type fender with the given model using SIEMENS NX CAD software.

What is a Fender?

A fender is the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

Types of Fenders

1.Full Bumper Type

2.Half Bumper Type

Mounting Regions on a Fender

1.A pillar mounting area

2.Body mounting area

3.Sill mounting area

4.Bumper mounting area

5.Drip area mounting

Design Methodology

Given Data:

Given Surface:

Procedure:

Design of Drip Area Mounting

This region is mounted below the hood inner panel which needs to be in flush when the hood is in closed condition and also there should be very less gaps. The drip area is either spot welded or in some cases bolted down via self-tapping screws.

A Pillar Mounting Area

The A pillar is the structural pillar that joins the body and the roof. Front fenders are fastened to the A pillar to form a robust structure.

Sill Mounting Area

Sill is the panel directly below the bottom of the door supporting the floor and used to combine the floor and the body. The bottom end of the fender is mounted on the sill body for reinforcement of the fender panel, thus the sill mounting position is designed with holes and emboss.

Bumper Mounting Area

Bumper mounting area is used to jointhe bumper and the fender with the help of the fasteners.

Baffle Mounting Area

Baffle mounting or mudguard are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch over the Tyre. It protects the car engine compartment and pedestrians from causing injuries from chip out debris on the road when the car is in motion. They are mounted on the fender using a special type of locking clips.

Conclusion

A complete design of a fender is modelled.
