Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
A report in front fender regulation
A fender is the part of an automobile body that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road surfaces, being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. The fender extends between the front door to the front bumper covering the front wheels of the vehicle.
There are two different types:-
But for the present conditions only half bumper type fender is used in automobiles, as they help in reducing the scrap material after manufacturing the part and also help in reducing the overall weight of the vehicle.
A full bumper type fender used in an older car
A half bumper-type fender used in the new car.
Regulations
There are regulations that need to be followed by the car designers to bring the car to the market.
We are considering the once followed by the European countries.
There are five different points that should at least have an L=10 mm distance between the fender and the wheel surface.
They are as follows-
- First, comes the SA, a vertical centerline through the center of the wheel
- Second, comes the SB that is on the left-hand side, 30 degrees from the vertical centerline.
- Then comes the point SC on the right-hand side at 50 degrees from the vertical centerline.
- Followed by the points SD and SE, as SE has to be fixed at the distance of 150 mm above the horizontal line and SD has to be at an equal distance from both the lines i.e SC and SE.
The design:-

Need to specify if the design will be approved by the European standard.
Taking a plain on the outer surface of the wheel.
Marking the required angles for the measurement.
Projecting the lines on the fender and measuring the distance.
The point SB it is having a distance of 10 mm which is the required measurement, thus, it is approved.
BUT on the other side that is points SC, SD, SE are not having the required distance when viewed from the rear end of the design.

The plane created on the surface of the wheel's outer surface is crossing the fender, which shows that the space does not have any positive distance. As per the regulation, the fender should be 10 mm on the outer side of the wheel surface. This concludes that the design is will not be approved.
