Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Aim:
This project shows that examine the given fender wheel arch design to verify if the wheel arch of the fender meets the European standards.
Wheel Arch:
- Wheel arch is the semi - circular part of the vehicle is position on the top of the wheel. Wheel arch claddings are there to stop water and dirt ingress from getting into tight spots around the wings of the car to prevent corrosion.
- They also protect any electrics or pipework from the water. They are originally made for vehicles when are supposed to take more abuse in terms of off road or water wading. It prevents scraping of paint near wheel arches also prevents water from getting inside the panel which could lead to rust.
- The design of Wheel arch of a fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers' compartment and pedestrians from projectlon of water, mud and stones. For the vehicle to has its use permit in different countries, the wheel arch of fenders must be compliant with the standards and regulations set by the respective countries.
Fender Wheel Arch:
- Fender Wheel Arch is the sem-circular part positioned above the wheel of the vehicle.
- The most important body was a change that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender.
- The car was large in size, high definition headlights that extend to the wheel arch.

Two types of Fender:
|
Full Bumper |
The full bumper is mostly cover the wheel part almost 18% as shown in the below. |
| Half Bumper |
Half Bumper helps reduce the weight of the fender at the same time it proves the safety of pedestrian moving motion as shown in the figure. |
Fender design considerations:
- Drip Area.
- Wheel Arch.
- Baffle and ORVM mount area.
- Frontal crash regulation and requirements.
Standards for Designing Front Fender:
European standard for wheel arch: According to European standard clearance length for the wheel arch will be 10mm. SA, SB, SC, SD, SE are the point on the wheel from where it is projected to the wheel arch to measure the distance.

Sketch for Measurement:

Particular section images:
SA

SB

SC

SD

SE

Results:
| Position | Required Clearance Value (mm) | Observed Clearance Value (mm) | The requirement Test |
| SA | 10 | 9.9490 | Fail |
| SB | 10 | 10 | Pass |
| SC | 10 | 0.1139 | Fail |
| SD | 10 | 2.9216 | Fail |
| SE | 10 | 6.0733 | Fail |
CONCLUSION:
The given fender fails the European Regulation for Wheel Arch Area. Because the clearance value varies between section to section. Due to this, tire may go outside the direction. So, it's danger for the pedestrian safety and aesthetic look of the car as well.
