Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER Fender is a part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well(underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, ricks, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the roating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface. The main purpose of fenders on cars is that they shield the wheels and they protect the passengers, the pedestrians, and the other vehicles from stones, mud, liquid, and other debris that van fly in the air because of the speeding roatating wheels while the car is running.
Types of fender The type of fender is based upon the area covered i.e., full fender type and half fender type. Full fender type:- Full fender type is traditional type of fender where more material consumption is oberved. This type is used in old design of automobiles where it increase the overall weight and thus reduce performance. The maintance also relatively more due to more surface.
Half fender type:- Half fender type is modern design where less material consumption is oberved, so productivitity increase by reducing size of blank and thus providing more performance. The maintance also relatively low compared to full bumper type.
Wheel Arch It is a curved part of the fender positioned right above the wheel. The wheel arc is designed such that it protects both the pedestrian and car cabin from mud, water rocks and other road spray. Different countries have different wheel arc regulations in place, and wheel arch design has to comply with them to be deemed usable in that country. For avoiding design alterations of the same vehicle to meet the different regulations in different countries, the maxium values of the concerned regulation parameters are taken into consideraton for design purpose. Fender Wheel Arch Regulations Japan Regulations:-
measure clearance L of tire, hub, cap & fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate. clearance must be greater than 5mm in all the three positions. whell guard requirement the value a shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rear ward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel. US Regulation:-
.Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* & make the clearance check table. .all values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulation. .the value of 'a'shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel. European regulation:-
measure CL L at section SA-SA SB-SB SC-SC SD-SD SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate. at all five sections the CL L value should be greater than 10mm to satify the european regulations. wheel guard requirement the value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel. PROCEDURE:- 1) According to the European standards, the design fender wheel arc should pass the guard requirement procedures. 2) To start the test, first create a plane with origin as center of the wheel plane. 3) Then sketch using lines along with given dimensions as SA,SB,SC,SD and SE. 4) After sketching project the intersection points on the fender face. 5) Then use measure distance tool and calculate the clearance between sketch lines and wheel arc. 6) The clearance between SA line and wheel arc is -9.949mm also the line SA lies outside the fender so it is negative values.
7) The clearance between SB line and wheel arc is 10mm also the line SB lies inside the fender so it is positive value.
8) The clearance between SC line and wheel arc is -0.113949mm also the line SC lies outside the fender so it is negative value.
9) The clearnce between SD line and wheel arc is -2.8875 also the line SD lies outside the fender so it is negative value.
10) The clearance between SE line and wheel arc is -5.9973mm also the line SE lies outside the fender so it is negative value.
RESULTS:-
| Region | Required clearance | Actual clearance | Results |
| SA | 10mm | 9.9490mm | Fail |
| SB | 10mm | 10mm | Pass |
| SC | 10mm | 0.113949mm | Fail |
| SD | 10mm | 2.8875mm | Fail |
| SE | 10mm | 5.9973mm | Fail |
CONCLUSION:- From the above results we can conclude that the fender does not pass the European regulations, as the minimum clearance L between the fender wheel arch and wheel for vehicle and pedestrian safety is 10mm and this design does not meet the requirement.
