Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Using the Europian Standards Discussed,

Calculate the Wheel Arc area and prove whether the car will pass the standards or Not.

1.Wheel arch:

  • The shaped part of the bodywork of a car or other vehicle that allows the wheelto be accessed, and in the case of front wheels, enables them to be steered.
  • The wheel arch is the semi-circular part of the fender located just above the wheel that does not touch each other in any condition at the time of driving
  • Wheel arch plays a major role it must shield the wheel and protect both the passenger's section and as well as also protect pedestrians by the projection of water mud and stones.
  • For the vehicle to have its use permit in different countries, the wheel arch of fenders must be compliant with the standards and regulations set by the respective countries.
  1. Aim of this challenges

The aim of these challenges is to calculate the wheel and wheel arch distance to prove whether the given fender od car will pass this European standards or not.

  1. European regulations requirements

The wheel Arch area of the fender is usually designed as a cover or sheild over the tyre along its perimeter to stop any debris or stones , dirt, sand, snow etc. from getting thrown into the vehicle/ BIW area as well as outside the vehicle and onto other vehicles or pedestrians on the road.

The European regulation requires a pre determined clearance or a minimum distance of 10mm. to be maintained between the Fender (Front Quarter Panel) and the respective tyre at particular points(5 points/Sections to be exact) along with the tyre profile as shown below:

  1. The clearance as shown in the figure above at all five sections namely (SA, SB, SC, SD, and SE should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy all my requirements.
  2. Draw a line towards the centre facing vertical from the centre draw a line towards left of 30 degrees and draw another line facing towards the right of 50 degrees then name the three-line sb, sa, sc.
  3. Then draw two more lines as shown in the fig and name the two-line as sd, se.
  4. Measure the 10 mm clearance for each of the lines to satisfy the Europe standard requirement.
  1. Result

In this sketch is drawn and the wheel face as per the European standards the projection of the line as measured as the endpoint of the archer. The software used to draw the sketch is NX 12.

Obtaining the clearance value ‘L’ at section SA, SB, SC, SD, AND SE.

Calculating section SA for clearance

SA: 9.9489MM

Calculating section SB for clearance

SB: 10.000MM

Calculating section SC for clearance

SC: -0.1137MM

Calculating section SD for clearance

SD: -2.8958MM

Calculating section SE for clearance

SE: -5.9751MM

Observation table:

Notes the negative sign is used because the curvature of the arch is slightly in side from the wheel surface.

Suggestion for this wheel archer.

The suggestion to this model is this model is not satisfied with the condition so we should modify the curvature of the fender in such a way that should have a minimum clearance of 10 mm.

Conculusion

The given model is analysed according to the European standards and the above table shows the clearance for each angle as per the table this fender does not pass the European standards at all sections.
