Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

FR-Fender

  • Its primary purpose is to prevent the sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the

Air by the rotating tire.

  • When vechicle is moving, tire pick up stones and others and hurl them in all directions. Fenders are basically present to

Prevent any injuries to pedestrians and contain the motion of these particles, The fender is located over the wheels of the vehicle As such, there are four fenders on a typical vehicle: front right, front left, rear right and rear left.

Wheel Arch:

Wheel arch comes with some standard specification. When viewed from the front and top side of the vehicle,

If the wheel is protruding outside the fender, that would lead to more chipping while driving and compromises

Pedestrian as well as the vehicle safety. Taking these factors into consideration, the wheel has to be positioned inside the wheel.

The are different regulations in this regard based on different regions. This case study has been done according to European regulations. As explained diagram below, the minimum clearance ‘L’ recommended at all the 5 point on wheel arch shown here should be 10mm, the points being SB, SA,SC,SD,SE.

Folowing measurment taken from wheel to arch in each region.

Clearance for SA= 9.95mm

Clearance for SB= 10mm

Clearance for SC= 0mm

Clearance for SD= 0mm

Clearance for SE= 3.04mm

Conclusion:

From the above result we can conclude that the Fender does not pass the European Regulation, as the minimum clearance between the fender and the wheel is 10mm. This design does not meet the requirement, so styling team needs to work at this SC,SD and SE regions.
