Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Section Modulus:

Section modulus is the geometric property of a given cross-section used in the design of flexural members.

Section modulus depends only on the cross-section shape of the beam or structure.

  • Ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fibre.
  • It gives as an idea about how much of load the given structure can take.
  • If the section modulus increases the moment of resistance increases and hence its load bearing capacity.

Then the value can be used to find out the section modulus.

Using the formula given,

S=I/y

S- Section modulus

I- Moment of inertia value from the inertia analysis.

y- Distance from Neutral axis to outermost fiber.

Section1:

Imax = 4810918.186 mm^4

Imin = 14697.315 mm^4

Total length of hood=880.6

Distance from Neutral axis = 440.3

Y= 440.3

S = I/Y

Smax = 4810918.186/440.3

= 10,926.455 mm^3

Smin = 14697.31/440.3

= 33.380 mm^3

Improved Section 2:

For improved section, I have increased the section area for the hood by offsetting the inner panel line by 1mm.

Smax = 4794247.750 mm

= 4794247.750/440.3

= 10,888.593 mm^3

Smin = 15267.054 mm

= 15267.054 /440.3

= 35.589 mm^3

Improved section 3:

Improved section3:

For improved section, I have increased the section area for the hood by offsetting the inner panel line by 2mm.

Smax = 4777647.397 mm

= 4777647.397/440.3

= 10,850.891 mm^3

Smin = 15874.493 mm

= 15874.493 /440.3

= 36.053 mm^3

Conclusion:

The above calculation shows that Improved section 1 and 2 have greater section modulus than section1.

All these calculations are essential while designing to know the strength and load-carrying capacity of the given component.

It quite evident that increasing the distance between the inner panel and outer panel has significant impact on increasing the

section modulus which in turn its strength also.
