Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Calculation of Wheel Arch gap at required points of a car which passes the European standard.

FENDER

Fender is a important component of car which resist any strikings of sand, stone, oyher particles to hit engine.and also provide a very good finish to vehicle.

wheel arch is the bottom portion of the fender and for this wheel arch design there are lot of things to reminded. there is a wheel arch standard for different cars. according to their use of action and road conditions.

First of all we can say that the wheel arch standards for cars are different throughout the globe.

1)Japanese standard of fender wheel arch

2)Europian standard of fender wheel arch

3)American standard of fender wheel arch

we can see how they differ from each other using a pictorial representation.

1)Japanese standard

in japanese from the vertical axis the point where ehich intersect th wheel archfrom 30 degree to left and 50 degree to right will posses a minimum of 5mm distance. ie, there should be 5mm distance from fender wheel arch to the outer wheel surface. then only it is satisfied.

2)Europian standard

in europian standard same as that of japanese standard and in addition to japanese there is some other calculating standard. that is, in addition to 30 degree to the left and 50 degree to right of wheel vertical axis respectively, a height of 150mm from the wheel's horizontal surface is pointed and at the intersection of wheel arch a line should pass from centre point of wheel and a bisector line is also considered in btw this line and the line which is 50 degree right to thr vertical axis of wheel.

and in europian standard, there should be a gap of 10 mm with wheel arch to wheel outer surface at each intersecting points that we have considered before.

3)US Standard

In us standard there must be a gap of 5mm at each intersection of wheel to arch of 10 degrees and it analysed from -20dgree to 180 degree.

NOW WE CAN GET IN TO OUR CHALLANGE SECCION.

Challange is to measure the wheel arch standard according to the europian standard.

A fender design is given and we need to check it for europian standard.

so get in to nx cad and open the given data.

once the design is loaded, we will find the centre point of outer most surface of wheel using point tool.

and after create a datum plane in that point which is tangent to the wheel.

we want to find the wheel arch gap according to europian standards. so we sketch the europian standards calculation lines and respective angles.which is all done at a reference to the centre point that we have created.

once it is done we want the intersections at 150mm from the horizontal axis of wheel, for that we should project the wheel arch curve to our sketch , which is in the position of intersection using 'project cuve' so we can create intersections easily. and draw a line though intersection of 150 mm abouve and make a bisector between the two lines(line which intersect at 150mm and line which is 50 degree to the right of vertical axis of wheel).

name the lines as SB SA SC SD SE when counting in clockwise direction. so the sketch is ready according to the europian standard. so now we can measure the wheel arch gap using 'measure distance' from analyisis.

im providing the gap values of SB SA SC SD SE respectively;

SB

SB pocess correct measurement according to the europian standards of wheel arch gaps.

SA

SA fails in the standards. its not providing sufficient gaps, but a slightly difference in value.

SC

SC also fails with the dimentions. gap should be increased to obey europian standards.

SD

SD agail fails in the measurement of wheel arch gaps according to europian standards.Gap should be increased.

SE

SE also failed in the gap measurement.

SA

INCORRECT VALUE
SB CORRECT VALUE (10mm)
SC INCORRECT VALUE
SD INCORRECT VALUE
SE INCORRECT VALUE

CONCLUTION

So we can conclude that the given fender design is not suited for europian standards, and it should be chnaged its values of wheel arch gaps according to europian standards to fit .
